340 International hydraulic loss

My Dad just bought a 340 International with a loader on it last week. So last night he calls me and tells me he lost the hydralics on the tractor. He said he was using the loader and he lowered the bucket and then he couldn't raise it and the tractor didn't have power steering either. Does anybody have an idea where to look for a problem?

Yeah, what Mark said. I had the filter come loose in the housing - it was sucking air instead of fluid. Changed it and everything started working again. Filter is on the left side of transmission, under a plate. NAPA has the filters. Good luck

My 340 may be a bit different. My filter is on the lower right side(brake side). There should be a threaded oil indicator under the left footplate to check fluid level.

How do I know what I am looking for for the oil level is it a bolt or square plug? Thanks guys. I also read on old post there is a bypass/safety valve somewhere on the tractor that dump the pressure from the system when there is no call for pressure becouse of a positive displacement pump. Does anybody know where these are the old post said something about under the gas tank. Does it have hoses to it?

To check the level on mine there is a threaded bolt w/ another bolt inside that/ I loosen the smaller one and fill until I see oil dripping out.

I had the same lash-up on the side of the case on my 504- obviously an oil level check, right? It would "kinda" work, but skipped and was jerky. I finally got another pump- and when putting it in, noticed that the internal inlet for the pump seemed to be slightly higher than the level checking plug. So I measured down to a point just above the inlet and filled to that level (several quarts "above" the check plug) and it worked great. I suspect there was nothing wrong with the old pump at all- just starving for juice. I still don"t understand it.
