i own a three point post hole digger and would like to build a down force kit for it. anyone have plans for this type of a project. they would be most appreciated. thanks

Try putting good bits on the starting edge of the auger. It should make a big difference. If you can look at an auger for a Bobcat, you'll see that they have replaceable bits. I'm not sure if all 3 pt. augers have replacaeable bits or not. Dave

what kind of tractor are you using? while it is possible to rig a remote, hydraulic cylinder in such a way to apply down force, you can also cause extreamly serious damage to the tractor by doing it, especialy if its a light duty machine

Sharpen the bits or you will be like the fellow who used down force then got the auger stuck and no way to reverse direction to unstick. Lots of fun turning an auger backward by hand when its stuck 3ft deep.

Back in the 70s and 80s when I was a fence contractor I rigged up a 3X8 hydraulic cylinder on an old Five Star post hole digger. Used this digger on a Kubota 210 for while but had to be careful because it would lift rear of tractor off the ground. I finally rigged up an International 2400 ind. with loader and it handled it a lot better. I simply welded a couple of 4 inch channel iron from the yoke upwards on each side of the boom to pin the base of the cylinder to then welded a plate near the top of the boom just above the gear box with a hole to pin other end of cylinder. Most of the time I would use only the cylinder to raise and lower digger. Left three point control all the way down. I dug thousands of holes with this unit. It really came in handy when I had to dig 6 inch holes 38 inches deep to fence in an eletric plant.

as others said, you can copy the hydraulics on augers that come with a downforce supplying cylinder- but with sharp bits and moist earth my auger will pick the nose of the tractor up.

another consideration is a bind in the driveshaft...if the shaft binds and won't compress easily, it's slow going digging your hole. lent my digger to a "freind" who returned it with a bent shaft, it never dug well after that until I replaced the shaft.

My tractor (Farmall 200) has down pressure available on the 2pt hitch. Have a 3pt conversion on the tractor to run the post hole digger as well as other tools. NEVER have I used or felt I needed down pressure on the auger. Keep a good edge on auger, and a good screw point, and have NEVER had a problem with penetration. (Except on rocks!)

my tractor is a case 430 and the digger is practically new, including new augers.i am drilling in hard pan clay. the bit goes down a few inches then just shines the bottom of the hole.i see that some of the manufacturers offer an optional down force kit to purchase. i thought i would the same. what is a gannon kit?
