Case tractor indentification

I have an old case tractor here where I work. We are trying to identify it. I can not find a serial Number on it anywhere. On the block on the right side is cast into it 4862A. From research i have done the A would indicate it as a 1955. At first we thought it was an 600 but some others pictures make it look like it could be a LA model. Does anyone know how I can identify this tractor? It is a gas with electric start. Also we are changing the oil in it and can no t find a dipstick How do you check oil level?

Have you checked the oil pan for petcocks? They use these for determing the oil level in the pan.
The level should be between the lower and upper petcock. Just open them and see if a trickle of oil oozes out. If you"re planning on using this tractor hard in the field for plowing or disking I would have the oil level to the top petcock. Hal

will look but have not noticed any. Unlees they would be on the front where we can not see them. ZIt does a couple of small set screws with square heads on the side of the pan but they are only about 2-3" of the bottom. when we drasined the old oil 7-10 gallons drained out. It does not seem like 2-3" off the bottom wopuld be that much oil. If I could identify this tractor I could look up capacities. Thanks for your suggestion

On the right side of the pan you will find two small pipe plugs remove these and fill to the top one. If its an LA it will take 3 gallons of oil.
Be sure to remove the drain plug just behind the pan in the bell housing (not the transmission case) Run engine for awhile then recheck oil level.
I use 20W50 in my 1945 Case LA.

Forgot to tell you how to identify your tractor.

Look on the rear of the engine on the left side where it bolts to the bell housing for the stamped in serial # it will say LA in the serial # If anthing else then its what you see SC DC and so on.

Take the first two didgets (49-4= 45) to get the year made.

THANKS FOR THE HELP. SURE ENOUGH THERE IS A NUMBER ON THE ENGINE WHERE IT BOLTS TO THE BELL HOUSING. 5208547LA. Walt by your clculations this makes it a 48 LA. As for the oil drain we have a drain plug right on the bottom of the oil pan in the middle. This is where it looks like it drains. When we drained it it overfilled a five gallon bucket and I guess another 2-3 gallons ran over. We are thinking it was overfilled. Another problem is: Brake pedals are on the floor do you know if I check the resivior and fill it, will they possibly pump back up? Sorry to be so ignorant but have never worked on these old tractors.

Virgil, the clutch is a wet one, that is it runs in oil from the crankcase. Besure to drain it at the bottom of the bell housing.
Yeas you are correct it is a 1948 Case LA. I have one i use for parts.
The brakes are usually shot but you can try adding fluid if the are not frozen in place.
Parts are available at the local parts place just take the old ones in for samples.
If you have to remove the hubs remember that they they are very, very heavy about 300 to 400 lbs ea.
