JD 175 with 14 hp Kawasaki Engine

I"m reworking a JD 175 with a 14 hp Kawasaki engine that sat up for 2 years. I"ve gotten most problems ironed out except one. The engine "lopes" or "surges" very badly at idle to half speed. Anything above half all the way up to full speed it clears out and runs smothly.

I think it"s the carb due to sitting but would like to know if anyone thinks there might be something else to look for. One clue is there"s an adjustment screw on the top of the carb that does absolutely nothing. Screw it all the way in nothing. Screw it all the way out nothing. So I think the passage under the screw is probably blocked.

BYTW, there was no gas in it when I picked it up. It had all evaporated. I"ve been running clean gas with a lot of sea foam added to it to see if it helps any.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like it is hunting and surging. It sure does sound like a pluged jet that it causing it to run lean. Then it hunts and the speed goes up and down alittle. I would clean the carb.

If memory serves me right, you're working on an FB460V engine. Don't put too much Sea Foam (alcohol)in it. Too much alcohol will lean the fuel mixture. Like Tom says, get a carb kit and a float and rebuild it. Sounds like the low speed circuits are restricted.
