Holding bin ?

Here is a holding bin I bought and set up when I first bought this place. I had no storage or truck, so I would fill it and all the wagons and call for a semi to take a load away. Haven't used it since I put up the grain bins. I have about 20 acres of beans to harvest and am wondering about putting them in here and keeping till spring. It holds about 550 bu of corn, I figured it and a wagon will probably hold all the beans I get off of the 20 acres. I am thinking about using 1/2" conduit and bend to make supports for a tarp to cover it. Also have some used tin and 2x6's, thought about making a roof, but that would take more time to get done. Would a canvas tarp be better than one of the plastic ones? Anyone have any thoughts about this? I really don't want to tie up a 3000 bu bin for 600 to 800 bu beans, but I don't want to put them in there and have a problem keeping them. Chris

I would for sure get the BEst tarp.... make sure that water can't sit on it... get a tarp big enough that it hangs down the sides aways... and are tied down good so wind can't get under it...
Just my 2 cents ... Mark

Chris, that's a nice BIG shed in the background. Any chance the bin could go in a corner and not need a roof?

You can't get a good enough tarp, either put your bin in that nice shed or hire the semi now and haul them to town. Eliminate the risk and the worry.

Was concerned about the wind and a tarp, seems like it blows hard all the time around here. I've had my aluminum flag pole bent over a few times. No cement inside the shed, or that might be a way to go. If I could find a few cheap wagons, I'd just leave them on the wagons till spring. Oh well, just a thought. thanks, Chris

Does your local grain dealer rent storage space?

What you spend on a tarp each year would pay the storage bill and you would not have to handle the beans twice or worry about spoilage.

And when you want to sell you just call them to sell and go pick up your check. No fighting the mud or weather to get them loaded out.

I don't know what your beans normally yield, but if they do 45, that's 900 bushels X estimated .18 for four months storage at the local co-op = $162 storage.

Looks like hauling them to town is the safer bet. Jim

put them in the semi and haul them period. Most place always have 30 to 60 days to price things or just dump them it still woild be way better than rotten soybeans ansd handling that dust twice or more. No decision to me been there done that

Chris,
I don’t think a tarp would last long. I have a 22’ temporary metal ring that I use, but it has a made to fit tarp. You have to fill the ring in the center, full up to the top edge to get the cone shape for the tarp to sit tight and shed water. That would be tough to do with that square top. The wind here would destroy the tarp from the corners I think. Any movement in the tarp, and the wind will keep chaffing it until it gets a hole.

PVC or fiberglass rods with a slight bend will hold the tarp up far enough for water runoff. The a good canvas or heavy plastic tarp securely tied down will do the trick..
