861 Diesel air cleaner

Is there A place I could get a better air cleaner then the box that bolts to the intake. I"m spending a lot of money on a rebuild and would like to upgrade the air cleaner. Is this the only air cleaner they put on a 861 Diesel?
Thanks for any help David

Hope this helps a little. We bought a new 961 diesel in the fall of '58. Immediately had problems with the box air cleaner plugging when picking corn with a mounted picker, so the dealer soon added a pre-cleaner but kept the box. Air intake was now moved outside the hood (no longer thru the restrictive louvers) and approx operator head level when seated. In '67 the precleaner inlet stack become plugged with oil splash from the box cleaner and the dealer replaced the whole mess with a new Ford supplied side mounted unit/precleaner. The air inlet was slightly lower than with the previous precleaner. This had the normal oil cup readily accessible on the bottom. Looked good and worked great.

Thanks James So they took the box off and put a tube straight to the bottom of the intake and used a air cleaner like a gas 172 would use mounted back by the battery? Or was it a complete new set up just made for the 172 diesel?

I believe it was a completely new setup for the diesel. I suspect that the original box unit was canceled and replaced by this new setup or at the very least was a heavy duty version offered later by Ford. This dealer was not one to couble stuff together. My younger brother sold the tractor when dad died and I'm not sure we have any photo's. I'll ask him, but don't hold your breath.

I've searched the memory banks, and have become somewhat convinced you are correct. I'm sure I saw a similar unit on a later built 901 gas. The whole unit (painted white) hung outside the batteries left side, attached to the hood assembly.

Thanks James I'll start looking at old photos may I can find one on a later tractor mine is a 1958 model But a newer on should fit it David
