I drove by a farm, large fields of Buckwheat, Sort of unusual in this area, Central Penna. Thought I'd ask. Your location? Reason for planting? Acres planted? Your use? or market?
Any other comments. My family uses a little of it to fill pillows, microwave the whole pillow, then use same as hot water bottle, for pain relief.

Organic farmers use it as a smother crop to kill weeds a build the soil. I tried it one year, made the bees happy but didn't seem to have much effect on the weed population.

Buckwheat Festival is a big deal in Preston County WV every year. Its in the PA-WV-MD corner where they raise a lot of it. I think its Kingwood or Terra Alta WV. A Google search will tell.

Our Tractor club will have a display of tractors and also be participating in the Farmer's Day Parade on Saturday. We seed a few acres a year, later in the season, so our bees can collect the necter from it and they can use that for winter feed. If the weather cooperates and the bees can make enough of this, we can take all the summer honey. I think the honey from buckwheat has a bad taste. I then plow it down to help build soil. The wild turkeys love to eat the seed.

Hey you guys who plant for your bees...I live in Iowa and may want to do that some day for my bees. Not much blooming here in Sept...how many weeks does it take buckwheat from planting to blooming?
thanks
Pastor Mike

I planted some for a food plot for birds. I let half blossom and go to seed and disked the other half down and then planted milo. Another milo plot with similar soil is not as productive because I din't start with buckwheat. It will be part of my spring planting sequence for a few years or I may use cow peas for the same thing.

I think it's around 60-70 days from planting to seed. Not positive. Internet would have the answer.

Seems it was about a month from seed to flower in warm weather. No idea what it would be in the fall, just a touch of frost will kill it.

You have to combine it on a good drying day with the sun shining brightly. Cloudy days just won't work . Cylinder speed has to be slow. It is different than oats or wheat and the combine has to be set accordingly.
