O/T Electric motor ?

After smelling a burnt smell the house A/C fan won't come on. I switched out the capacitor with another one, no change, but when I spun the fan, it started up. Question is, is the capacitor bad or the motor? Thanks in advance!!

Are you sure the cap is for a cap start and not for a cap run?
It could have fly weights on the end of motor that are stuck.

Thanks for the help! The cap is an external one that was with the last motor(not sure if it is good). This 220V motor goes through many start cycles and seems to have about 4 to 5 year life before I start hearing it hum a little on startup followed a few weeks/months? later with no-start.

Its sounds like EITHER the "new" capacitor is bad or the motors start winding is bad. I guess if its NOT the capacitor, then its motor time. Thise connections goota be good ya know

Start caps usually just die without the stink.
The burned smell would be telling me the start winding is burned out. This would happen if the cap shorted out.

Thanks for all the help! I will post a new message when I find out what the problem was. After talking to my electrician b-i-l I will do some testing but looks like a new motor and cap are in my future:-(
Thanks again!
