OT: Tree on Garage

So in the storms last night, a big tree from my neighbor's property came down, knocked one of my trees down ad is resting on top of my garage. Don't know if there's any damage yet as it was dark and there were too many leaves. Anyway, before I can get the smaller tree off my garage, his big one needs to be removed, but may be too big for me to deal with (and heavily sprung). Should his insurance co. be removing the tree, or mine?

If the tree is his, you shouldn't have to touch it. Take plenty of pics. Hopefully you get along good with the neighbor, because he will have to file the loss with his ins. and get his adjuster out. Then they will have to hire someone to do the work.

Don't know about yours but my insurance only allows $500 for tree removal.Don't ask how I know!

Back when I did tree work over 10 years ago, even though it's your neighbors tree, it's yours to clean up. Best to call your insurance agent and get their opinion. As as was stated below, there is a limit to what insurance companies will pay. That limit usually only covers clean up and not removal of the tree.

My experience has been its an Act of God. Unless the tree was standing dead or compromised "structurally". Homeowners have an obligation to maintain the grounds. A boundary tree or near boundary tree requires both property owners perform routine maintenance.

The most recent example I can think of a tree being compromised structurally is a large maple was pruned of all its major limbs one side of the tree. It fell over (to the weighted side) when the foliage filled in and onto a commercial building. The owner of the tree footed the repair bill since he performed the tree trimming against written professional recommendation. Granted this was an extreme...shallow rooted tree, wet area, large canopy.

My insurance man said if it was on the house or building they would pay some. If it is on the ground they won't pay.

The problem here is dealing with the insurance company. If there is no real damage to your garage, get out your chainsaw and you and the neighbor cut the trees up and get them taken care of. No need for insurance involvement. That is the problem today, no one wants to work or take care of themselves anymore. Look at the hurricanes the last few years, the people in the big cities down south sit and wait for the feds to bail them out, the rural folks get out and take care of themselves and their neighbors. If us farmers would wait for the feds all of the time the city folks would have starved a long time ago. Sorry for the rant, just sick of everyone arguing over insurance and is it his problem or mine, just get out there and get it cleaned up.

Adam, I appreciate the rant, I've been known to go on a few! I pretty much do everything myself, built my own house, keep all my equipment running, split my own firewood, build cabinets and whatever else comes along. I do know my limits though, and this tree is pushing them. At it's base, its about 4-5 feet around, goes up 20 feet, splits off into two, then each of those splits off into 6 or more. Each one of these is tangled up in the trees it fell on, some are 15-20 feet in the air. I just don't have the equipment to deal with it.
