CASE serial #

I have a CASE SC that was my grandpas but can not figure out the year of the machine. I understand that you subtract 4 from the first two digits however this is different. The serial plate and the serial # on the side of the engine begin with 880 and I do not recall the rest right off. What does this mean and how old is it? Is it possible this is a demonstrater unit? Please if you can help I am very curious. Thanks

Most likely you are not seeing the first number in the serial number. It is often hidden under the rivet on the left side of the tag. Probably is a number "4" making the number 488xxxx, or a 1944 model.
Case changed the numbering system for the 1953 models, but the serial number will start with 80xxxxx... Gene
