O/T I had a discussion with two friends about cremation. One said that you are burnt to ashes like in a bonfire, and the other said that you are like an old tractor melted down, not in flames. Anybody had this done yet!!!! Harold

My understanding without having had personal experience is that the gas fired cremotorium burns the flesh to ashes. Bones are harder to burn and the weakened bones are chopped up and added to the ashes.

Don't know how it's done.
I am a pilot and was ask to scatter ashes. I was surprised when they brought them. They were in a box a little smaller than a shoe box and was heavier than I expected.

It"s true there are concerns with obese people being cremated.
The high fat content does make for a hotter fire.
The bones are also larger, heavier, denser. It takes more burn time and more grinding in the ball mill later.
Another concern is implants such as pacemakers. If forgotten they will go "boom". Then there are hazmat concerns.
It"s also disconcerning watching a corpse burn. They will jerk and move sometimes as they heat up.
The fellow I knew who worked at a crematorium drank a lot.

Herald,my father-in-law was a funeral director every since he was out of WW-II.He took me,and his other son-in-law over to see his new crematorium, and he explained what the procffdure was.The body is placed in a cardboard box, slid into the furnace, the temperature is brought up to 3000 degrees, for 3-4 hrs. When finished the ashes, and what bone fragments are put into a separator tray, and shook separating the two.The bone fragments are usually less than 1 inch long.In my opinion burial,or cremation it leads to the same thing, one is just faster than the other.'From dust you came, from dust you shall return'.

Yeah, If anyone has ever experienced this could you please take notes and tell us how it went cause I don't like alot of pain.
Sorry I couldn't resist.

My brother-in-law was cremated last year. He was a WW2 Navy vet and they had a military memorial service. This was in Florida and we flew down for the memorial service. We've decided that we want to be cremated. We have 4 burial plots, but we're going to sell them. Hal

Watched a show on the history channel few weeks back. They were at a company that builds them. It is all an automated process now. Slide you in a cardboard box and everything. Basically at the end of the cycle they put a funnel in an urn and in you go.
The one problem they were saying was that with more people being creamated, they are having trouble getting relatives to take the remains.

It was a very interesting show. Don't think I want to be burned and ground up. Seems a little bit too much like what the guy down below wants to do.

Are you trying to destroy evidence, Just kidding.
Anyway I am told that a cremation is more expensive then a regular burial funeral, price it out.

My grandaughter was killed in '05. She was 16 years old. My daughter had her cremated. She was placed in a cremation casket which is considerably more than a cardboard box. She was cremated in that casket. The fire is so hot the only thing left is ashes from the bones. Everything else is vaporized. Her ashes were put in a urn and we took her home. The only problem now is someone broke in and stole Heathers ashes. We know who did it but we can't prove it. Cremation is cheaper than embalming. rw

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the Germans actually studied this during WWll in the concentration camps and had a formula for the ideal mix of obese/skinny people that used the least fuel to cremate. I think I may have read that in "The Arms of Krupp".
Personally I think cremation makes things emotionally neater than seeing a corpse. It used to be cheaper by far but fuel prices may have changed that.
Embalmed bodies leach embalming fluid into the ground water near cemeterys.

(quoted from post at 17:23:43 09/13/08) Here in oklahoma it cost less then 1000. compared to 7000. or more.
The last I knew here in NY State it could be done for under $500.00
I know this because when my father died his main wish was to deny as much as possible the money that went to the "merchants of death" (his terminology) He considered these merchants to be funeral parlors, undertakers, obituary listings that had to be paid for, makers and sellers of caskets, lawyers, etc. etc.
Well , we did the whole thing for something like $468.00. We did have a bit of a hard time with the crematorium when we refused to buy a urn from them. We had our own Hills Brothers 3 lb coffee can which they didn't appreciate.
Scattered the ashes out back and that was that! I know he would have loved it

Dads cousin has a business creamating race horses and other high end animals. He said he did a polar bear one time. He said once the fat caught fire the the temp shot through the roof. He shut the blower down cause he was afraid the thing was going to melt down....

My kid brother bit the biggie in Portland OR. 9 years ago and the body wasn't rocovered for 4 days. I made the arrangements for Mom and Dad and had him cremated out there and shipped back here. He arrived 8 days later in a small plastic box neatly wrapped in a plain brown wrapper via priority mail. I made a 4"x12" stainless cylinder and transfered him into it (perfect fit for a 6'2" 240 pound man) and welded him in and polished it. Dad died almost 2 years to the day afterward, so the funeral director placed him at Dad's left hand in his casket

My sister died in oklahoma 2 years ago.It cost 700 for the cremation. We got ripped off in her
estate, her ashes are still in my garage.

Teeth are the only thing that is not turned to ashes.Sometimes a few bone fragments will also be found in the ashes. Son In Law's uncle owns a funeral home and crematory. He has watched bodies being cremated. He says the heat makes them sit straight up every time.

Let us not forget about the cremotory at LaFayette GA. Familys were given cement instead of ashes. They threw the bodies out back of the property. Saved alot on their gas bill. If I had a loved one cremated I would want to be there. David........

I presume you mean to other people.I'm told a number are cremated together so what is the certainty of getting the correct ashes..

I hear a lot of Crazy stories about what people do with a dead Body --- seems they think it will effect the Dead in some way --- but It SURE DON'T

my neighbor had his old Dog Cremated for $300.00 -- now If he would have offered me One Hundred as a Good Neighbor -- I would have taken the dog in the woods and clunked him on the head and put him underground in about 15 minutes
That would have done as much good as giving the 300 to some one else --- and he could have spent the other 200 on Dinner out with the Family.

But People don't think and just do things like Crazy People ,,,,

Sounds like a plan to me...although I might go the burial route. Isn't there some states where you can be buried on your own property?

I think people should be buried so the bodies become fertilizer. I did know an old man who lived at a hospital in the 40's with his mother and siblings due to poverty. He told me he would go sit on a stairwell leading to the crematorium and watch the bodies being cremated and sure enough they would sit right up as the temp was raised. He was scared shitle$s about the idea of being cremated when he died but when he went last year his kids went for the cremation because it was cheaper. Don't thi nk that's right but oh well!
