One of my brothers-in-law told me once that when he was a kid, at silo filling time his dad would go the the local sale barn, buy an old crow-bait horse for $20, and stick him in the silo.

They would then start blowing silage into the silo. Of course, the horse would stomp around to keep on top of the silage, and in the process would pack the silage down. When the silo was full, with the horse on top, the old man would take his .30.30, shoot the horse off the top of the silo, make tankage out of him, and feed him to the hogs.

My BIL said once a gal from the Humane Society got wind of it, and came out and threw a two hour tantrum. It went in one ear and out the other. Next year at silo filling time it was the same old routine with the horse.

I'm no silo expert, but I've filled a few for neighbors; the openings in the ones they had were only about 2 feet square.

And that is why sheep were used- they would walk around the outside of the pile, next to the wall, and pack the silage.
