I beat the tractor

for once. Doesnt happen very often. I managed to only break 2 of the o-rings and got 3 of the sleeves in. After 9 months the B just might be worth saving.

1)how do i use a cylender hone. The sleeves got some very light rust in them since i pulled them out.

2)how does that form-a-gasket stuff work??? Does it hold up??? My seal that goes between the rear seal cover and the block diddnt survive coming out. Neither did the front. Thanks alot guys.

First off, I never use form-a-gasket on it's own, rather as a sealant for a gasket. Possibly just personal preference. Whatever you do, follow the directions on the tube, and generally speaking the surfaces must be TOTALLY clean.

As to honeing the sleeves it depends on the type of hone you have. For a 3 legged hone you need to come up with a combination of rotary speed and up and down the sleeve so that the marks left in cylinder by the hone are at approximately 30 degrees off horizontal. Try and go up and down the whole length of the sleeve each time just don't pull the hone out of the sleeve far enough for it to spring out. You should use some light lube while you are honing. I like to use varsol and will often hone sleeves in the parts washer with the stream running through them.

If it was only very light surface rust I might be tempted (especially if you don't have a hone) to carefully use so fairly fine emery cloth, being careful to stick to a similar angle.

If you are talking about the paper gasket you can cut one out of gasket material. You can use poster paper in a pinch.

Form A Gasket has its place. The trouble is its place is probably not in your tractor unless you know what you are doing. If you are talking about Silicon gasket sealer, its fine to smear a thin layer on a paper gasket to help seal it.You dont want to use any more than you need to,just a thin layer.Form A Gasket is a different kind of stuff supposedly to make a gasket out of and it might work, but its not necessary to replace a gasket like you are talking about with Form A Gasket when all you need is some gasket material to cut a new gasket out of,then coat lightly with silicon put together and if you have a lot of silicon that squeezes out, wipe it off so it wont get inside the motor.

On the hone it makes some difference which kind you have.If you have one with 3 stones you want to use penetrating oil, squirting on the hone stones while you run it up and down the cylinder kind of fast but not going out the bottom or top.More or less you do the same with the kind that has balls of abrasive on the end of nylon strings kind of like a brush, called a dingleberry hone, you squirt penetrating oil as you push it up and down the cylinder. With that kind of hone it doesnt take as long and it looks good if you do it right.Other things can be used besides penetrating oil, solvent, alcohol, maybe other stuff, but a can of WD 40 OR Liquid Wrench will do a V8 usually for me with a little left over.

I forgot to say you need to wipe the cylinder with a clean rag once youve honed it to get the hone grit out, then you want to put oil on the inside of the sleeve and coat the inside with oil, whether or not you put it together right then.If you would happen to get side tracked you can just clean the old oil off and re oil it,but if you dont it will be rusty tomorrow. If you arent going to put it together quickly you can wipe grease on something like that to keep it from rusting.Anyway before you put it together it has to be clean and have oil on it.

You can use that gasket maker stuff if you like, but I myself don't use it. It does not seem to work as well as gasket material, but that's my opinion.

Lanse after honeing be sure to wash the cylinders with a cleaner ,naptha or something like that. Then wash with soap and water and then dry with a clean cloth to remove metal and abrasives that will wear out the engine.Good luck.................
