O. T. Hosts for Free Web Site.

Now that fall is nearing with winter close by I am once again thinking about using indoor days to create a couple of websites. One for my hometown history and one for my family history and genealogy.

Do any of you have a site and or preferences for any that use free hosting? Do you have thoughts about ease of use, amount of ads, ease of building, etc.

I'd love to have a professionally built site but that is out of the question so I'll have to wing it on my own---if I proceed at all.

I would appreciate any comments even if they are "don't do it."

Thanks. greenbeanman in Kansas

Quite often your internet provider will give you a site, so check with them first. There are a couple of other options for a free site, but I think the provider has the option of placing advertisting of there choice on the site. You might want to do a Google search for "free web site".

I have a couple old tractor free sites at geocities which is part of yahoo. You can go to geocities.com and sign up for a free site. The only thing with the geocities is that you will have an address like this "http://geocities.com/yoursite". The ones I have are Eagle Tractors and Hart Parr Tractors They have a free "page maker" online software, but don't know nothing about it as I have my own website software called Dreamweaver. Also you will have to put up with an ad on the right side, but that can be minimized away. I took an online course in html language one winter a few years ago and it was a big help in understanding web pages and the way they are put together. Here is my other site for our old tractor club that I have done Le Sueur, Mn. Pioneer Power Show Good luck with your venture.

I been using this site for a while it seems to be ok, not real thrilled with the control panel and the reports it gives, but it is free.
You get to choose from about 6 domain names to use.
who ever you use make sure to make a backup of it on your pc in case your site gets hacked or company goes out of business. Do not ask how I know this LOL ( another site I use to use)

Thanks fellows for the thoughts and suggestions.

Last night I did happen to remember that my ISP does allow a subscriber to have web sites.

I also remembered that Google has sites available which is probably what this web site dummy needs, i.e. something so simple and bulletproof that even I can do it.

Also read about some others.

After hearing gun shots a few blocks away from my house I had some problems getting to sleep so put my energy into getting my feet wet with an introductory page on Google. I figure I'll practice there and perhaps use my ISP or perhaps a paid site so I can use my own domain name.

Thanks for the info and reminders about backing up, etc. I certainly appreciate all of the input on any topic this board provides and will check out the sites mentioned as well.
