1948 JD A first reduction gear cover mystery spring

While removing the first gear reduction cover a rather heavy spring fell out and I cannot place it in this area or anywhere else on the tractor for that matter. It's about 2" in diameter and about 1 1/2" long with a wire diameter close to 1/4". Do you think it could have just fallen in and left there for years when someone was working on the clutch? Any help identifying this spring will be appreciated.
Photo in "Help identify" gallery.
Thanks,
Bernie

No mystery. It goes in a recess in the cover and holds tension on the engine camshaft bearings.

O.K. Thanks everyone, I"ll look for this when I go home. tonight. I"ve tried to be careful removing items as this is further than I"ve ever had this tractor apart. (I intend to remove the crankshaft so that I can re-work the clutch splines) This spring just fell out before I could identify it.
