Remove woodruff key

I need to remove the woodruff key from the shaft of a new 6 volt generator.
This particular key is custom ground so that the portion of the key that is above the shaft is narrower than that below. Need to do this because the old key was thinner than the new key on the generator. Hence I would like to get it out with no damage in order to reuse.
Any tricks out there?
thanks in advance

What I usually do is first try to clamp on with locking pliers and wiggle and pry to lift it out. When this doesn't work as usual. I take a chisel that is ground so the cutting edge is on one side, lay it length ways with the shaft hooked under the edge of the key and start tapping. This will mark the key some but you can take that out with a grinder or file.

Good luck those keys on generators are tough.

Side cutter dike pliers usually pull them right out. File the marks off side before putting key back in then.

Any of the above tricks, or tap straight down on one end. This will push one end down, and pop the other end up. Once the other end is up you can grab it with a pliers or get a screwdriver under it.
