John Deere A won't start

I have a "41 slant dash A that will not start with the electric starter but will start if pulled. It is turning over just fine,it has good compression, all valves are operating properly, the carb has been rebuilt with every part new including the nozzell, the mag is hot and spark is good, plugs are new and checked in running tractor, timing is right. What am I missing?

Thanks for your reply. The impulse "seems" to be working and I hear it snap when I turn it over by hand. I'put a tester inline with the plug wires (the kind that lights up when it fires) and the spark is there. I also pulled the plugs and grounded them and watched them spark while cranking the motor. The plug wires are automotive type with boots and fairly new. I've tried Champion and autolite always with .03 gap.

Sounds like part of your problem is the plug wires. On tractors you need the true copper wire plug wires and on mags its 199% that you have to have true copper wire plug wires. Ones made for cars and trucks do not work well and cut down in the spark. I would replace those wires with true wire plug wires and see if that fixes your problem

I'm asking if the wires are resistor or solid core. Plus the make & model of the plugs.
30 thou is pretty generous for a mag.

I thought I posted this, hope it doesn't show up twice:

When I said "automotive type" wires I meant rubber with boots rather than the sort of braided fabric used years ago. Mine are solid copper. Plugs are champion D16. Now there is a new problem, the mag is dead! I promise you it was working and I have a witness to the inline tester flashing. Perhaps it works then doesn't work? The impulse is working fine. I thought I'd start from scratch and check the timming so I bench tested the mag and found it dead. Now I have that to figure out before I can move forward and hopefully that will solve my problems. Thanks for the help so far, I may be back......
