MY 12 VOLT SYSTEM HAS TWO RESISTERS IN SERIES WITH THE COIL I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS BURNING THESE OUT . I HAVE I 12VOLT COIL WHY DO I NEED THESE RESISTERS WHEN GOES OUT I BYPASS IT AND THE TRA CTOR STARTS CAN I DO AWAY WITH THEM OR IS THIS JOB SECURITY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THEM.

If you have a front mount dist you need the resistors or you will burn out your coil very quickly. Coils cost more than resistors.

6 volt coils need a resistor. Some 12 volt coils need the resistor. The resistors have a power rating and need to dissipate maybe 25 to 32 watts of power. Just any old radio resistor won't work. The one on my JD 4020 has brass screw terminals and is encased in ceramic. You also have to choose the resistance appropriate to the coil. Its been there decades as far as I can tell.

A 6 volt coil will run fine on 12 volts without a resistor, just it will overheat and eventually fry. It will give better ignition up until it fries. It may also burn the ignition points from the excess current. It will be a race to see whether the coil or the points die first.

I converted my 8N to 12 volts years ago and it runs like a top. I have the front mount distributer, and 12 volt coil that sits on top. In this application you need the extra resistor. Now for the side mount distibuter some 12 volt coils have a bult in resistor so adding and extra resistor might cause a problem.
