I want to put an opener on our shop doorand I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions of brands and maybe how hard it would be to install myself. Door is approx 12 feet high and 16 wide.

Thanks for the help

On a large garage door, I once saw that a fellow used an old garage door opener and mounted it so the sprocket on the garage door opener was in the same plane as the rotation of the spring assembly at the top of the door. He then took a sprocket off a bicycle and mated it to the end of the spring/pipe assembly at the top of the door. He then just used the same bicycle chain to connect the two. It took some ingenuity but worked well.

I have always used Chamberlain. I think HD sells them. You will need to get the extension bar and chain.

I think they also make the Sears Brand.

I doubt you will find a opener for a 12' door at Home Depot or Sears. It will need to be a commercial opener. Overhead Door, Wayne Dalton, etc. will have them. Will probably cost more than the door.

I just installed 2 chamberlains on 2 10x18 insulated garage doors. The things work really nice and are relatively quiet. I'd recommend them if they have one that is big enough. They won't be cheap, the ones I got were $300 each with the extentions.

I have a 12 by 18 ft. door and a Wayne Dalton opener. It is very good and would recommend highly. They are not cheap but in my opinion this is one area where cheap don't cut it.
