battery upkeep

Just was wondering what others do to keep their batteries good thru the winter? I have 4 wheelers, lawnmower, 5th wheel, etc. that will get no use in the winter. Do you take out & store inside the house, or leave them & re-charge? I am tired of recharging/replacing batteries after winter.

Hey there rustin;
Wouldn't it be worthwhile just to remove them and keep them in your basement, (or somewhere
sheltered). You can even put a "trickle charger",
on them, to keep them "up to snuff". Just don't
put them on concrete, or bare ground.

For the $40.00 they cost or less a battery tender is the way to go. They will keep a "GOOD" battery strong for years. My Super M kept going dead over time, new battery ,wireing, voltage reg switches etc etc.

The battery tenders even have a disconnect in the cord so you don't have to keep opening the battery box . Just unplug and use then reconnect that simple.

You can buy them threw any auto part store.

I got 4 years out of my sawmill battery by making monthly hydrometer checks.Dont buy sealed batteries. These small batteries need a low charge rate, no need to cook them with trickle chargers or maintainers.Lawn mowers are used for 6 months then the batteries get zero attention for 6 months. If they are in a state of low charge they will freeze.Thats the end when frozen.

Hello rustin
1)Clean them, charge them, store them.
2)By a battery tender for each of them.
It is an old wifes tale that batteries will self discharge if you set them down in concrete!
Guido.

Charge them up, make sure the top is clean (no surface discharge), keep them in a cold & dry place.
I will charge them with a trickle charger once or twice during storage.

.my book says "leaving a battery standing on a shelf for months in a discharged [flat] state leads to very early battery failure due to sulphation.Plate buckling is another common cause of failure. This is usually a result of not being "topped up" and the plates being exposed to air.The air causes the plates to warp and crumble and in addition to reducing capacity, the crumbled plates form a sedimentary deposit which can cause shorting".

Harber Frieght has 12v maintainers for $7.49 on sale......I have 8 of them....they sure work for me....the pain in the butt is the 6v batteries....if you find a 6v cheap charger they are not aotomatic....hope this helps......Don

Like wise. I have three lawn tractors, one large tractor, skidsteer, truck. etc. I have cords running all over the place but they work really well and you can keep them on 24/7 until you need them.
