'Nother Hydrant Question

I've been pondering this for awhile, and I thought I'd post it since another fella was talking about hydrants.

Couldn't a person buy the 4 ft. hydrants at their lower price, take em apart, add some rod to make the control rod longer, and add pipe to make the pipe longer? 8 ft deep hydrant at close to the 4 ft. price.

Why not?

Yes, I know you can buy two foot risers, we just had a guy do one the other day, I dont think you buy a longer valve you just get a longer version of the pipe and cap that covers it.

Should work. Around here we wrap the underground portion of the pipe with electrical tape, otherwise they rust from the outside inward. Pipe stays like brand new on the outside when wrapped.

There is not that much price difference at some stores, I know not at Menards, have you tried L&M? By the time you buy the pipe and coupling and the rod I don't think it would be worth it.
