Tire repair

I have a very good rear tire that has a gouge out of it, but not down to the cords. Is there a product, such as a liquid rubber, to cover this up that would be suitable? These are 12.4 X 38 so do not relish spending $700 for a pair of them.
Thanks

Had a rear tractor tire with a nasty gash on it. Took it to a tire facility that does vulcanizing. They put a boot inside, and vulcanized a patch over the gash. Has been several years ago. Have to look to find the repair, and it has held up well. Cost me $60. Have a gash in a front tire, they're going to see it as soon as the fall work is done.

Vulcanizing cement is available from www.millertire.com. You will also need a boot from them to patch the inside. This needs to be done right or it will never work.

Dennis, you the one in the lake of the Ozarks area?? Any how Tech makes a stuff that is 2 part Cat. #858 that works but shelf life is very low and its not cheap at around $50 for the 2 cans and each can holds 1lb

You can take it to most any tire shop and they will repair or send it away for a section repair. They can also give you an idea whether or not it's worthwhile to bother. A 350 buck tire is not that expensive relative to spending a bunch of money on fixing a used tire... It's mostly prime mover and forestry stuff that's repaired like that today along with OTR tires. Ag tires are seldom repaired anymore. It's genreally nto worthwhile.

I watched a show on TV about repairing and retreading large earthmover and loader tires. They have a rubber that they put over a bad section of the tire that is soft. Then they put the tire in a large autoclave type thing for several hours to fix the tire carcass like new. They also had a very large lathe type machine for stripping all the old tread away. Lots and lots of rubber shavings. I think the shavings could be recyled but can't remember if they could be used for tires again. Dave

If it is not down to the cords then forget about it, nothing to worry about. All the other replies are for tires that have had cord damage, some only minor, others for a complete hole thru the whole tire. Where there is cord dammage they cut out the dammaged layers of cord and replace then one at a time until it is all built back up, but with rubber covering the cords you only have a looks problem, not a use problem.
