I promise I won't call anyone a redneck

But,
Has anyone had the idea to mount a motor on a belly mower? If so, how'd you do it and did it work?

After seeing a mower that hangs on the front of a quad that costs (the mower attachment) almots $3k, I started brainstorming.

Has anyone beat me to it?

Dave

I just happen to have an unused 6 foot belly mower available...looks like it would required a verticle shaft engine and maybe some trailing wheelbarrow wheels for height adjustment...
what HP do you think it would take?
something like this attatched to my golf cart would make quick work of the back yard!

I was thinking something in this direction, but didn't realize it'd take so much motor. Guess I'd better start watching ebay.

Yes, i have done it and it worked ok. Was a 5ft cutting deck with 3 blades. I put a 12.5hp vertical shaft engine on it and used the original idler pulley as a clutch. Mounted it on wheels and towed it along.
Worked quite well on lawn. Would not be much good as a slasher. Sorry, no photos available. Was pre digital time.
All the best,
Rex

I always wondered why people go to that expense and trouble to use their atv for things like mowing. A six foot mower with a sufficiently large engine seems like a lot of weight for an atv, either the engine or the transmission will probably overheat within 15 minutes.

Are you kidding? the new ATV's that people are using are basically small pickup trucks in what they can pull. I just barely read an article about the New Polaris 850 4x4 they came out with for 2009. 70hp and beats the 1,000cc machine in power that Artic Cat came out with last year. There is even little logging arches you can get for them to skid out firewood logs. Those lawnmowers are nothing compared to what those machines are built for.

My biggest concern is how much these new big machines weigh. I think the dry weight of that Polaris 850 was 754lbs. Just imagine trying to get that off from youself if you ever rolled it over.

A friend of mine has a Yamaha 550cc atv that came with a 4' pto driven 3 ph mounted mower on the back.
He mows about 3 acres with it at warp speed, 4th gear anyway WFO. I have never seen one like it before, Its a 1989 model and he said he has only had to change the belt one time on the deck itself.
Doesn't Troy-Bilt make one of those mowers with a hitch that you can offset to any direction behind your atv or tractor ? I swear I have seen them advertised on tv basically just like you want. Its one of those TV advertised ones anyway that you might be able to get some ideas from.

These are Swishers atv attachments BTW.

The ATVs that exist are overpowered for what they say they can do for work.
A 70HP engine in a small frame that doesnt have the weight to push 10 inches of snow. If these companies want ATVs to work like tractors then they should build them like tractors.

You won't get any arguement from me. I agree that the new ATVs and snowmobiles are getting rediculously overpowered. They also burn lots of gas. What people want is to go fast and pop wheelies at nearly any speed with oversized mud tires on them. I kid you not that I saw a snowmobile ad that read "the woods have never been so blurry".

My Gravely 812 garden tractor weighs about 900 with a belly deck on it.

many of those Quads cost about as much as a small pickup.

I know of a professional lawn crew that sometimes use an ATV And a 60" pull type deck It is an 8 hp brigs and mowing twice a month on a large factory lot can pull it at 9 mph constantly without stalling the mower, so a 10 or `12 hp should do what you want on a 72" deck

I bought a Ranson/Bobcat walk behind mower at an auction for $20 welded a hitch on the front and cut the belts to the drive wheels to make a pull behind self powered mower.Thats the way real Rednecks do it(LOL)Can even hang a cooler off the handles of the mower for hot weather work.

I don't have the pictures, but if you google acre-ease mowers, built by Kunze or koonze, can't remember the spelling, you will find a better designed, tougher mower than swisher makes.

Local small engine repair man bilt one from an old riding mower deck and other old parts he had laying around. dont remember what it had for an engine but it works good.

i don't need anything like that. my lawn is covered up with busted cars, beer bottles, and inflatable kiddy pools. not sure if there even is grass under there any more.
