It's to late now as I already bought it but I bought a Hahn Hi-boy sprayer with 172 cid Ford industrial engine. Anybody know anything about these motors? The good, bad or ugly? It starts and runs real nice. Good oil pressure. The rest of the sprayer is fair. The boom needs some atten. but not bad. I bought it cheap enough so I can spend a little time on it and still end up ok if the motor keeps running.

I'm not sure if they belong to the same family, but we have a 200 CID Ford industrial in our '81 Versatile swather..............burns a little oil but has never missed a beat otherwise...............

Not related to the 200 c.i. 6 at all. It's the same engine that they used in the 800, 900, 801, 901 and 4-cylinder 4000's, from '55 to '64, with the addition of a fuel pump. If the oil pressure and compression are good, it should last you a long time with normal maintainance. Parts, if needed, are readily available.

Sorry about that, I was thinking of a 170 CID I guess, not a 172...............

If the 172 engines were in the Ford 4000s, would they have been a flat-head design engine like the 8 & 9 N ??

with reasonable care, oil changes, tune ups ect it may run longer than you, if its in good shape now, very reliable engines, theyre found in a wide veriety of stuff

It's a decent old engine that like gas... If you've got bottom end trouble, attend to it now. Cranks are not exactly easy to find, but there is I beleive an aftermarket source for them now. I beleive NH discontinued support for the crank. Get to it now before you need a crank.

The 172 is an overhead valve engine. They went to the overhead valve engine in '53 with the Jubilee, I believe. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. Parts are readily available. I just finished rebuilding one for an 861.
