My neighbor passed away in the spring and now the widow wants tp sell his 190XT diesel. I don't know anything about 190XT's at all. I have had nothing but IH tractors for 30 years. I think this is a good tractor for it's age. Well maintained with just normal problems. What I don't understand is the pto. It has only a 1000 rpm pto. But my neighbor didn't have anything that took a 1000 pto. Right now it has a 540 adapter which is OK unless you forget. Surely there is a way to go from 540 to 1000 on this tractor but how do you do it? Hard to believe that a 40 year old tractor of this size only had a 1000 pto.

The pto is 540/1000 rpm. Never had one, but some tractors use a reversible shaft- operator manual should have all details you need to determine that. Hydraulically actuated pto clutch was an option. Big issue with early 190XT tractors was the light rear end. Factory had dealer updates, Series III definitely has them from the factory.

I'm miffed because all the 190's I've seen were a 540rpm pto you need to find out if it's a seriesIII and look at the pto shaft to see if it is flanged with bolt heads like maybe four or six 9/16" bolt heads which could mean it swaps out and turns around. Like JMS said check the manual it may possibly be a late model. I would post this on the AC forum there are a lot of knowledgeable people on there. As far as the 301 engine it's as sound as any engine made as long as someone hasn't got to the fuel pump with happy fingers. The engine is capable of some serious hp if unabated.

We Have a 190XT Series 3 and it has 540/1000. Just have to run at around 1900RPM for 540 and 2200RPM for 1000. Have had zero problems with the rear end. Tractor would be better if it had a Diff. Lock.

I looked at one once and it seemed you got the 540 pto rpm at one engine speed and the 1000 pto rpm at a higher engine speed.

I talked to a guy last night and he said if I spend about $1200., I can swithch it to 540. That seems alittle pricey just to get this tractor to run a baler. And if you just run the motor slower to get 540, you of course lose power, too. That doesn't seem right. I am used to IH with 2 pto's so you don't have to go to any expense. This tractor is a 1965 model and who in '65 would want a 90 hp tractor with only a 1000 rpm pto.

I'm guessing that was about the time all the forage harvester mfgrs. were starting to build two row forage harvesters and the engineers calculated that tractors approaching 100hp would have enough torque to shear drive shafts under heavy load and would risk snapping the pto shafts off and reduced the size of the choppers drive line thus saving money for them the mfgr. also reduced the gearbox size. This is also why most tractor mfgrs increased the size of the 1000rpm pto shaft in there tractors approaching 200hp. If you bought a new IH and wanted a split pto for tractors over 100hp they were not covered under their warranty even though I don't recall seeing any broken myself even up through a 1586 but we never did much 540 work with it except maybe a Woods batwing.
