OT-LPG or CNG for trucks

Does anyone on this forum have a CNG or LPG powered vehicle? What about you guys from Canada? I have been looking to buy a dual fuel LPG or CNG conversion kit.

I have found a few international companies that make the LPG kits- such as Prins (netherlands) or FuelKo (canada). Does anyone have information they can share?

CNG is fairly cheap compared to gas right now $1.10/therm (a therm is 100,000 BTUs, compared to a gallon of gas 114,000 BTUs) Propane is about $2.20 a gal, so there is some incentive convert to an alternative fuel.

For all the "advantages" nobody seems to bother with LP or CNG conversions now.Even taxi cabs.
GM used to sell a wide assortment of factory LP & CNG vehicles.Little to none now.
About the only new LP equipment around now are forklifts etc that operate indoors.
Battery powered and gas hybrids seem to be the short haul choice and lightweight long haul. Diesel for high powered/heavy long haul.

Propane is about $2.20 per gallon, you are correct. But that is in a bulk tank delivered to your house. If you were to have little portable tanks filled, it will cost you a little over $3.00 a gallon to get them filled.

I like to tease my LP fuel delivery guy as he runs diesel trucks ! and they can get the fuel cheaper than anyone. He states a couple of reasons. Diesel trucks are more plentiful to buy, more common to find parts and service for and alot more power for pulling the loads.

Chrysler makes lp gas trucks they sell in mexico.
I suppose because they don't have the epa to answer to.

As far as I know all the Schwan home delivery trucks in my area run off of LPG. They run mostly GMC,but some Fords. A friend of mine bought one and put a flat bed on it. He says it does real well, but he has trouble getting anyone to fill it up for him.Everyone is afraid of the fuel tax deal.

There are many conversion kits out there for most vehicals. Most LP gas delivery suppliers in your area can give you a name or phone #. There is federal and state tax on LP motor fuel, just like gas and diesel

I have a pickup that was converted in the 70's and I have to pay propane price plus road tax. Just less mpg than gas but the oil stays clean and it runs great.

About 55 yrs ago worked on a rotary well drill (shallow wells) mounted on a fairly heavy Ford truck chassis, that ran on one of the gases, but can't recall whether butane, propane or NG.
The systems were sold on longer engine life: no liquid fuel to wash down cyl walls, oil stayed cleaner etc as Pitalplace said; only trouble I recall was regulator or some such component that froze up in cold weather.

Not only do you have to pay road tax, you also must have an Alternative Fuel Permit. At least you do here. Its a little sticker that goes on your windshield, that if you don't have it, they will not fill your vehicle.
Thats IF you can find anyone to fill it for you. I used o have a telephone van that I bought that was propane, I had to carry grill tanks and a hose to hook up to my tank if I went anywhere after 4:30 pm as NO Lp Gas places would fill the thing after 4:30 for some reason.

That little sticker was issued by the state and it cost $90.00 per year, kind of like an inspection sticker.

I did find a local dealer that does conversions on industrial equipment and fleet vehicles, but their prices were sky high- they want $6K for LPG and $9K for CNG... Apparently the CNG tanks are very expensive and are only certified for 10 years.. So there goes that idea. I think I will still pay them a visit to see if I can just buy the kit and install it myself. I could get by cheaper if I went with a simpler throttle body kit, instead of a port injection one that I was looking at. However, I did find out the same kit over in the netherlands sells for $2k minus the tank..

There are federal rebates ($4K) for alternative fueled vehicles, but it is only for dedicated (not dual fuel) systems.. Bummer.

I did find some "factory made" CNG Ford trucks on Ebay. There was also a CNG conversion kit called "Galileo" retailing for $1200 minus the tank- but I have not read any good reviews about that system.
