OT: What's Your Best Job?

Labor Day is next Monday and we observe the day as "a day off from the job for the working man".

Many of us have changed jobs and sometimes even careers over the years.

Looking back on all the "jobs" you have had in your lifetime, what is/was you best job.

My best job: I was an 18 year old college Freshman working as a breakfast cook at an all-girls dorm.

Learned alot through observation about cosmetics and anatomy.

Right after I left the Air Force, I worked for about a year as a blackjack dealer. I was working in a friendly, blue-collar bar, and I made a ton of friends there. I still miss that job...

It wasn't a paid position, but I got to be a judge at a sexiest woman contest at a private party one night. Does that count?

I worked my way through High School and college at a golf course. I intended on making a career out of it, but I'm in the herbicide business instead. I loved watching the sun come up while mowing greens. The smell of fresh cut grass and the wet dew, cool mornings. By 10:00, it would be 90 degrees and miserable, but I loved the early mornings. Unless of course, I had been at the "swamp" drinking .25 pitchers of Natural Light until a couple of hours before work! Those mornings didn't result in very precise mow patterns on the greens, needless to say. I was sure alot tougher back then, couldn't do that anymore.

For a 30 year old I have had alot of jobs. The best part time job I have had, a neighbor had a bunch of pigions move into his barn. He would give me $5 for every dead one I would bring him when I was in high school.

Shoot'n chickens out of a cannon at the chicken factory woulda been a great job if not for the crank heads.

My night job now is great. I work at a water factrory. 12 hour shifts, 3 one week, 4 the next. Only working half the time gives me alot more time to work on the farm.

Dave

I asked an old-timer one time what he did since he retired.

He said "Nothing, and I don't do that until about 11 in the morning."

I'm in Walt'scatagory as I have been retired for 18 years. Best "work" was the time working for Western Electric in the country of Nigeria. Have some nice souvenirs to enjoy now. Workjed 39 years with telephones.
John

It's a tie, working at a zoo as a keeper and getting to care for the animals, Polar Bear, Elephants, Buffalo, Lions and watch my kids have fun on Sundays. The other is the job I have now because it is the last one I will have working for someone else. Retirement in 157 days. After 25 yrs public service. Loking forwart to doing stuff for me, mama and the grand kid.

My best job was Diesel mechanic in the oilfields of Oklahoma and Texas. Started six months before my 18th birthday. You talk about learning alot fast, it was a blast. Did it for four years. Wish I was still doing it.

Best job I ever had was managing an R&D operation for a small company. Three guys and all we did was design and build special tools and machines. Some stress but a lot of successes and I went from a college educated engineer to a Journeyman Tool & Diemaker and a Master Electrician. That was the real education. Best of all is I'm semi-retired and still doing it.

Dairy barn when I was 14yrs old, milked at 4&4 I'd ride the school bus to work for the evening shift 'course I couldn't make the morning shift with having to go to school except summers and weekends when I would drive myself to work. It was a different time then, lot less traffic everybody knew everybody, wasn't a big deal for a 14 yr old to be driving himself to work.

Same guy owned 2 dairys I started at the small one worked mabye a year there til he took the gov't buy-out deal, moved over to the big one was there mabye another year til he took the same deal on it.

That was some awesome money 'tho for a punk kid in the early to mid-80's.

Summer college job-swimming pool (public, apts, hotels, etc.) inspector for county health dept. Cake job, plus worked 4 hrs./day but got paid for 8.

Favorite job? Honduras in 89-90 helping the good guys after Ollie and his crew got in trouble. Best job? The one I have now here in Mexico.

Doing it now!! Super cushy job selling wholesale auto parts to shops and the like. Nothing beats a nice air conditioned job!!

17ys old.. worked summers for a construction co driving a tractor with a spray rig on it, spraying herbacide on road edges in a subdivision that had been built but needed to set dormant for a year.. so we had the contract onthe vegitation maintenance..

I drove a valmet tractor all over that empty subdivision for 3 months.. no one around all day.. was nice and peacefull...

Looking back on all the "jobs" you have had in your lifetime, what is/was you best job.
Being an army civilian working in Germany, I've learned to treat every job as the best and worst at the same time because, if you don't keep looking and changing, you stagnate and end up jobless. I've been everything from a gas pump attendant, to a parts clerk, to managing a $50+ million ammunition account for a Division. My best job was managing the ammo because it paid well and I knew I was making sure that all the kids I was responsible for were trained up and ready to kill bad guys. Unfortunately, the Division I was taking care of left Germany. I still had time on my tour, so was placed in the worst job of my life. The Soldiers I took care of didn't physically leave Germany, they just became another unit that went to Iraq. My new Job was in an Emergency Operations Center and I had the privilege of being the first one notified when one of them was killed or hurt. The first few months, it got to the point that I didn't want to go to work and read emails. I've also learned to live on +$25 an hour with full benifits and $7 an hour with none.
All said and done, I am supporting Soldiers of the greatest Country in the World and wouldn't have it any other way.

I've always gotten a lot out of work, besides a paycheck. Looking back I would have to say that my best jobs were all also the ones where I had the best bosses and coworkers. Interestingly, some of the jobs I liked the least at the time were the ones in which I learned the most.

Christopher

I had a second job working for a local pick your own orchard. They also sold cut your own christmas trees. My job was to greet the people, hand out saws, and tell them where to look for their tree. In other words, I got to tell people where to go and got paid for it.

Summer job with the state Highway Department in 1969, doing R & D on computer applications for highway construction, landscaping, etc. The permanent guys were older and basically afraid of computers, so I was pretty much "self directed", and did a lot of cool computer stuff back in the "early days". Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to accept the job offer I got from GE at the end of the summer- that was before Bill Gates made dropping out of college fashionable, and I felt I just had to get my degree before getting a job. Poor decision, in retrospect.

The job I have now is a good one. I write explanations of complicated things at a tenth-grade reading level.

I really liked helping my dad with farming but I couldn't give it my wole life.

I had a job at a tree nursery and turf consulting company when I was in college. I learned to plant trees as well as the owner, and learned a lot about growing lawns.

Second best job was with a paper company as internal auditor. Traveled all over the US and most of the plants were in good places to be.

I have had a few bad ones as well. At one, they would give me a raise and tell me I was great; two weeks later I was on probation and near termination. Another two weeks, and there was no mention of probation, I got another raise, and then after two more weeks I was on probation again. As I look at my co-workers I noticed that every one of them had bitten their fingernails down to the point their fingers bled. So - next time I was put on probation I gave them my final quit date.

The most interesting job was as a Sonarman in the Navy for 4 years. After 30 and out with AT&T I worked for a Snapper dealership as a small engine mechanic. I think that was my favorite and most rewarding.Been retired many years now and enjoying my tractor and Grandkids.

During my last years working for the Unisys computor company I did a lot of prototype machinist work. I worked on the second shift. Enginers gave me a project and let me build it the way I wanted. My supervisior was a woman, who I only saw a couple times a week. One of the best I ever had, in the 36 years I worked for the co. Since I retired I have my own mowing, and discing business, which isn't bad eather. Might add my worst since I am here. Myself, and a friend took on a job of shoveling chicken poop out from under the cages of a egg ranch. This was bad. Stan

I kinda like my current job, I guess. Work at a major military contractor designing and building the next generation of anti-submarine airplanes, replacement for the P-3C. Way too much travel, of course, and way too many hassles with suppliers, but the Navy is a good customer to work with, and the job should last me through til my retirement.

Can't say I ever had one; did work for a neighbor one time 'running' the pit while my dad cut his silage; made $3.00 per day; job lasted 4 days. Worked for my dad for a long time; pay was, 'you're putting your feet under my table 3 times a day'. Rest of what I did was a way of life, not a job. Had cattle (commercial cow/calf operation) for 47 years; put a crop in the ground (diversified row-crop) 40 years in a row; quit in 2002. Retired since; only work about 40 hours a week, instead of the 55-80 I was used to............

You might have had to keep an eye on him. Some of these women were offering favors to win. A few were such obvious winners, they didn't have to bribe any judges. It was at a sportsmens club, but they weren't wearing camo and they sure weren't hound dawgs.

I suppose the MOST Interesting Job I had was Working for the Dept. of Energy (DOE) in Denver making Atomic Bombs and Nuclear Weapons (now closed down) cause they have enough to kill the World a thousand times --- had to have a "Q" Clearance which is Higher then Top Secret -- so I can't tell you any more then that .... But Very Interesting indeed .....

Its hard to say about the best and worst for me. I'm not sure if hay farmer or county ag extension agent would be my favorite. I loved both jobs, and quitting extension is one of the few regrets I've had in life. Worst was a few years teaching high school ag when I had a principal who was the biggest ----- to ever draw breath. I realized then that money couldnt buy happiness.

For one summer in college I worked days at IBP cutting up cows, at night I worked as a bouncer in a strip club. For some reason I could stay awake late into the night and be bright eyed and bushy tailed, but was always dog tired the next morning at the slaughter house.

I have it now. University Professor Teaching technology educators, Environmental students and Technology managers. Computer aided design, Communications technology, and Manufacturing. Every day is an adventure. JimN

My favorite job was working construction, a brick layer tender and a carpenter's helper. Loved the work and seeing things built. Got tired of being laid off in the winter and short checks when it rained. I would have loved being a wildlife technician, but they didn't have them back then.

Only had 2 "real" jobs. On the last one for 19 years, on this one for 3. Miss things about the old one, but really enjoy my new one. I am a contracted logistics manager for one of the worlds leading supplier of plastic films.

While in the Navy our patrol squadron VP-48 had the P3. I believe it was the A model. I worked in the engine shop. It wasen't a job I liked, but got some free trips to the Orient. Stan

Hello James Howell
If by the "BEST JOB" you mean most satisfying, mine was as an instructor for Automotive and Diesel Technololy.
Guido.

Best job was the one I retired from--test manager for new construction submarines. Extremely satisfying, really felt like I contributed to the defense of the country and kept our boys safe.
And Fred you'll never find em your stuff just an't good enough.

Sonar Technician aboard the nuclear powered guided missile cruiser USS Truxtun CGN-35, home ported in San Diego, CA 1986-1989 I often regret not having stayed in longer.
USS Truxtun

During my senior year of high school , I worked at Weigels Shell ...Fred Weigel was very adamant about washing windshields at the pumps...Best leg shots ever were had there...]

Best job ever, farming, there is no second place.
There is something about looking at views likes this that will make you have a real sense of the world. Kinda makes you think about the big picture and what is really important.

That was actually your "gay-straight" test- you passed. Congratulations.

When I was 16, I went to stay at a friend's house one night. To my horror, I remembered (too late) that I had left a couple of my girly magazines out in my room. When I got home, they were gone, and I figured there would be he!! to pay. But nothing was ever said.

Years later, when I had kids of my own and I was talking about secks education with my mother, I brought up that incident, and asked if she remembered it. She did indeed, and said she went to my dad and asked what the punishment should be. He said, "He's a 16 year old boy, and is supposed to be interested in naked women. The fact that his magazines disappeared will cause him to be more discreet in the future (which was true), and nothing more need be done." What a smart guy he was!

55 years old this october and never had a off the farm job, so cow punching tractor driving wrench pulling is my career, and still learning everyday with YT, wont trade my job for anything else, best job ever :~)

Best? My current one as an Insurance Inspector. The company is headquartered in Columbia, SC, my District Manager is in Duluth, MN, and I'm here in Nebraska doing my job without anyone looking over my shoulder. My sole contact with the company is by computer and telephone.

Worst? Buildings and Grounds Supervisor for a local public school district. I reported to the Superintendent, who was also recognized as the town drunk. He was so far gone himself, he had to make everyone around him miserable to feed his own ego. He couldn't pick on the tenured faculty 'cause they could tell him where to go, so he made life hell for the support staff and non-tenured faculty. And the School Board was a bunch of wimps who were afraid to do anything about it for fear he'd sue them.

I guess right out of College, farming with my dad, and being on the substitute teaching list at the local high school. Got called one spring to do three days for the girls PE teacher/coach.

Man those high school seniors could flirt with a tanned, 22 year old farm kid!!!

And yes, I got paid for this.

Refinishing cars and trucks in an auto body shop! Did that for many years. Could make them look like factory finish.
But--due to other circumstances, and the changing of paint formulas, and the introduction of paint hardeners, i got allergic to the job, and had to quit. Went into restoring old cars, etc. did no painting!
Retired at age 72-went home, sat around totally bored! finally started a lawn mower repair business, and thats helping the income.
I just bought a 97 Ranger pickup, slightly bent, which i'm rebuilding! My old one, i named her Ilean, because Demon Rust has gotten really bad on it, and the frame is weak.
Somebody asked me why i do these things--no reason, just don't want to vegetate away!

I"m retired now, but I guess the only job I miss now and then is the one I had in the Navy; Communications Technician (CTR).

Best job was a Deputy Sheriff for a county in the Denver area. I was a motorcycle officer. Didn't get any better than that.

Door-Man at bars as a 2nd job. I was younger, worked out, slim. Had all the hot chicks and fights I wanted. I must have been nuts doing that job for two years to help carry the mortgage on my 1st place.

I can sure tell you the best job I never had. Was getting out of the Army, time to ETS. My section sergeant had to counsel me as to why I really shouldn't get out, but rather stay in. And as though that wasn't enough, I had to fill out a piece of paper explaining why I was choosing to get out as opposed to staying in. So, I filled it out. I wrote that after considering all of my military options, I decided to leave the Army to pursue a career as a stuntman in adult movies (I used the real word though). That guy begged me not to write that and handed me a new form, because he'd have to turn it in, and being a career GI looking to get more promotions, he really didn't want to get yelled at. You'd have thought I'd committed murder or something for that. Holy cow. It didn't take long to work my way from the shop's NCOIC, through the company and all the way to the Brigade Commander, and when I got to that guy, he had me standing at attention and was screaming in my face that the form was going to end up on somebody's desk in the Pentagon, and he wasn't about to allow that to happen because he was going to bust me and throw me into the slammer for obsceneties. I kid you not. I didn't back down and somehow left Germany with my stripes and ETS'd from Ft. Dix, NJ. But here's the good part. A year or so later I'm sitting in some uppity comedy club in Chicago getting hammered with some buddies and laughing our tails off and the comdedian on stage asks everyone what they do for a living. When he got to me being tanked up and laughing as I was, I said "I'm a stuntman in adult movies" (again, using the real word). That got the crowd's attention because no one ever heard of that before. So the guy asked what that entailed and I said that I filled in during all the hard scenes. That got the crowd going even more. But the best part, and I kid you not, there were a few women that handed me their telephone numbers, and I used a couple too. I've had some good jobs, but that's the best one I never had, so to speak. Ahh, to be a young punk again instead of an old one.

One of the most fun jobs I had was working for a fireworks company. Besides selling wholesale fireworks, I also helped plan, load and fire commercial fireworks displays.

I learned a lot about a lot of things I never would have been exposed to those summers. Neat to play with aerial bombs!

Working for GM, doing programming on cmm's. Worst job? Being a supervisor and having to lay off 400 people. Not a good experience.

Building aircraft refueling trucks for AutoTank Company in North Kansas City, now defunct. I was 17 and they taught me all I could handle, which was a lot. I learned mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, welding, pipefitting, metal work, machine shop, painting and a lot about life. Forty years later I still dream about being on that shop floor and the good men who took me under their wings.

Best and most satisfying job. Recapping tires for firestone. Hot, dirty, and real work. Most interesting, Toledo scale on the road tech. Best and most technical electrician for GM, including 4 year apprenticeship. Close second was us NAvy. Radio and TV was real good to me, too.
