toy tractor coleting

What does the value of a toy tractor do if its still in the box? Ive heard its better. Started colecting some from ertl...any way now they have a deal if you send in 8 upc codes they will send you a gold plated one plus S&H. Of course I have to open the package to get the upc code. So thats why I ask?

I have been collecting for about 19 yrs.In all the time Ive been around the hobby it is always better to have them in the box. Once I saw an empty box for a toy tractor go for more than the tractor would have without the box.As to would it harm the value if you took off the upc label? Depends,if the toy is just a collector model it is only going to appreciate so much anyway. Special editions and precisions ,may make me reconcider if I was to keep them whole. But as in any market nothing is worth more than someone will pay, and if its something they want what is a small hole in the box.
But when it comes down to it. If your doing it for investment purposes then you are in the wrong thing. Toys are made to enjoy, to make you happy. If taking off the labels to get another toy makes you happy, cut away friend and to heck with anyone who says different. After being in the hobby this long Ive seen a $10 toy appreciate to $200.But months later be worth $10 again. Toys are for fun not futures.

Mike, Just a side note here, I have a few 1/16 scale tractors I bought mainly for my enjoyment I have the orginal boxes but I display them without the boxes, Although I could never in a 100years rewire them back in the boxes like they come from the factory, Would this hurt any future value? Just curious. Dave F.

If you want the UPC ....take a sharp box knife and just cut the paper.....now peal the paper off the box.....no hole in the box and you have the UPC......Don

I agree with mike. Although As a seller of farm toys, its always better value-wise to have it in the box as it were brand new. However as a collector I always Open the boxes up and display the tractors, but keep the box. To me keeping it in the box and never opening it, well it might as well be a brick in a piece of cardboard. I like to enjoy the things I've found. Buying and selling is a fun hobby, but keeping and displaying the ones I want regardless of value is even better. If I was you I would absolutely cut the boxes to get the gold one. Sounds pretty neat. As far as money being in the things, that is true, but I find that its simply a fun hobby that I get a few free toys out of. Certainly Nothing to make a career of or retire by.
