O/T 7.3 Ford tranny give out

O/T Ford 7.3 Tranny ,,,, BIL blew up Automatic Tranny in one of his Diesel trucks ,, Thinking about shifting gears and going Manual, especially if a 6 spd can bolt to his 7.3 , And 2 , IF he can find one ? ,....... or Sq .1 a automatic overdrive that will bolt up ,,, Any of you Guys got any suggestions , or realize the limitations as to what can work ? Thanx Jim

An E4OD slushbox w/overdrive will bolt up, but isn't that what he already has????

What yr is his truck? It would need a tranny from behind another 6.9 or 7.3 diesel. Bell housings are different then the gassers. Almost would be best to take it to a shop and have it rebuilt with all the updates. If his truck is a none OD tranny now he will have to get a donor truck for wireing harness and computer.
I have a 91 that I have been down this rd with. So next step for me is a 4 sp manual out of a 86. Then a set of 3.53 geared axles tehn maybe a gearvendor 2 sped. Nothing like 25 +mpg

if its a 7.3 it should be the E40D.
Jasper will have a rebuild that is warrantied, cheaper and easier than doing all that he is talking about

if your going to do all that swapping why not go ahead and drop the 6 speed in, should fit no prob. most you would have to do is change the bell housing

Lots to think about here. Not just an tranny swap--he'll have to install clutch pedal setup, hydraulic master/slave cylinder components, cut hole(s) in floorpan for shifter(s), oil cooler + lines, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, clutch fork, clutch fork pivot, T/O bearing. And then I don't know about drive shaft length compatibility, cross member mount location, intermediate bearing for the drive shaft. That's just a few of things that come to mind...

Cost estimate for the job, not counting labor:

ZF 6 speed $1800 (rebuilt)
ZF core charge $600-$1000
Aftermarket HD clutch/flywheel/PP parts $1100
Master/slave cylinder (Ford) about $200
Clutch pedal + mounting hardware (Ford) $200 (estimated)
Cooler + lines $300-$500 (estimated)

All those numbers add up to over $3000. And I don't know if all Ford SD trucks have the hole in the firewall to mount the master cylinder--it's a "twist-lock" setup, not just a drilled hole....I'm thinking he should try to get an Allison auto from a junkyard. If he elects to go with the 6-speed option, I have a good flywheel. South Bend clutch offers a kit that works with the OEM flywheel.

go to the dealer and check out their price on the auto. seems I remember a friend told me he got a new one full of fluid and with warranty as cheep as a rebuilt one

or the 4R100. For what Jasper wanted for one, Ford has their version of the "heavy duty" auto. Suppoose to be pretty good. When my went out on my 01, I went with the one from Brians, never looked back.

John,

You're probably right about the Allison. Our F350 has the ZF--the one he's after, but we've had more than our share of problems. The master/slave cylinder is a pathetic excuse for for quality and durability. We just went through a clutch kit replacement after only 150K miles and on the 4th master/slave cylinder assembly.

For Jim, whatever auto transmission fits without mods would be his best choice.

You don't happen to mention what year truck.
I had an 88 f-350 4x4 with a zf5 manual was an ok trans that used the hydraulic master and a outside the trans slave cyl real easy setup. the hole should be in the fire wall for the master cyl, just remove the blockoff plate. But if I had my choice I'd go for an NVG-4500 or the Allison.

What year is the truck? The C6 used behind the early ones was adequate, but barely. The early E4OD's were called E4-OH-NO's by the dealership because they went out more often that a cheap hooker. Later trannies got better, as folks like Jasper and Fred Jones in OK City--Ford's official "black-box" remanufacturer--discovered improvements they could make for better cooling.

I rebuilt valve bodies at Jasper for E4OD's for awhile, and they incorporated a lot of upgraded parts from what Ford offered. Our comeback rates on E4OD's/4R100's was fairly low, so Jasper must've been doing something right. Jasper will probably shock you with their price, but ask the sales rep about the warranty...AND about what a "Monster Box" rebuild for your app would take. "Monster Box" has even more of the super-HD parts in it, so it's probably a lot higher...but it might be just the ticket, depending on how BIL uses his truck.

I don't work for Jasper anymore, so I have no vested interest in selling their stuff; I just saw firsthand how it went together, on a daily basis, so I know a little about it.
