J. Deere clutch assembly ,how do I know a good one?

Ok fellas, your .02 is needed. I am looking to replace the clutch assembly for my 50 B john deere. When I go looking for a different one, expectedly used or rebuilt, what do I look for? Where are the where spots? How do I know which one is wore and which one isnt? Is there a measurement or a degree of resistance that I should look for,and if so, where should I look for it at?I have a trusty salvage yard but I still dont like being at their mercy totally. The one I have now,is just wore to the point that I am reaching clear to the light bar to engage and nearly past me on the seat to disengage. I have done all the adjustments and it did take very little play away. When I was at Oakley,Owasso tractor had some assemblies there but not for a b. They said going price is no more than $50.Does that sound fair? Thank you for all your advice in advance. Sorry the post is so long.

Well your problem is not the clutch but worn out linkage. Rebush and oversize pins in all the linkage first. Then the clutch fork bearing and fork shaft can be rebuilt but if the splines on shaft and in fork are worn really bad try to find one in better shape. May be hard as most are all worn out too.

Young and dumb as I am I learned one thing very quickly.... when you take out an engine you put on a NEW clutch, when you remove a tranny you put on a NEW clutch, and when you need to replace the clutch you put on a NEW clutch. Try South Bend Clutch, located just a few miles from me. Very good at what they do.

Never heard that one before... but it about sums up the truth!
The old Case/Brown's are cheaper than cheap around here, and worth about as much.
