Loading A Tractor Without A Winch

need two people and some chain. Jack knife the trailer and block the wheels so trailer does not push truck around. use another truck or tractor to pull the dead one up. USE A CENTER LOCATION TO PULL FROM or expect bad things to happen. Just be careful and go slow if doing this. Can be done with a tag trailer as I have done it several times. JUST BE CAREFUL!

Get a helper. Line up tractor wheels with trailer ramps. Block all trailer wheels so trailer cannot move. Disconnect tow vehicle from trailer. Run cable or chain from tow vehicle over trailer and hook to tractor. Slowly pull foward with tow vehicle and pull tractor up on trailer. Have helper steer and apply brakes on tractor as needed. You can also load it alone with a come a long or a chain hoist. Takes a while though as you go a little, stop, lock up tractor, extend come a long line and go a little more repeating process until tractor is on the trailer. Have done it all three ways. Winch sure makes job easier though.

Come-along & some chain. LOTS of work, and will take a while, but can be done. Just remember that a come-along only has a limited pulling distance, so you'll need provision to block the tractor & reset the come-along occasionally.

Another word of advice from personal experience, stay away from the e-cheapo come-alongs you see at Harbor Freight & similar stores. They'll work, after a fashion, but generally more trouble than they're worth, plus I never really trusted one to pull anything heavy. A good come-along is expensive, but worth every penny once you use it a few times.

Other methods described below will also work. Just make sure that the trailer is absolutely solidly blocked so it can't move before you try pulling with anything not attached to the trailer.

I have a come along that operates with a chain. That thing is awesome. Beats a regular cable come along by miles. It is geared really low, but it will get the job done. I think it is rated for 8,000 lbs.

you are joking about unhooking the trailer and loading it right?
its no wonder there are so many accidents

HEY BUBBA, WATCH THIS!!!

Know of a guy killed this year in a trailer accident. Got the tractor loaded and it rolled on forward smashing him against the hitch. So I guess make sure you got blocks on the trailer to stop forward movement of the tractor. Also once loaded, block the back end so you don't have a problem when you remove the come along.

Also those cheap come alongs have cheap reversing and latching mechanisms that can zap a finger, break loose and free wheel, or the handle can jump back and give you a thumping. BTDT

You are just joking about unhooking a trailer and loading it, right? I hope so. People get killed doing that stuff.

Pull the tractor up a very large hill (does not apply in North Dakota, or Nebraska). Then take a run at the trailer. Make sure your brakes work.

Use a snatch block and a cable. Hook the snatch block to the front of trailer, then run the cable from dead tractor to snatch block and off to the side. Hook a tractor, or truck, etc to the cable and pull dead tractor on. It's simple and easy, only down side is you need another person and a pull vehicle.

Thanks for replies folks. I've loaded a few dead things with a come-a-long and I don't want to do it anymore. I'm looking at a tireless 1935 Case C, so it'd be a bear to load. I like the idea of a snatch block and cable if'n I can get a block, cable and the guy has a tractor or truck.

I've had an electric winch on my gooseneck for 20 yrs. No need to get killed cause you spent all your tool money foolishly on food elec. well you get it.

Thing is, I'm borrowing the trailer...wait a minute...maybe I'll ask the owner of the trailer if he has a winch that he uses with it...hmmm.

Use a cable 3 to 4 times as long as the trailer attach a snatch block on front of trailer feed cable from back of tractor though the snatch block and back under tractor pull with a good vehicle that weighs more than tractor and has good traction.
Use cables with built in eyes and good clevises.

Bigger gear and shove...
I like pallet forks sometimes.
I guess a comealong would work if that's all you had.

I'm not sure how far you might have to travel or what size of tractor your working with but this is what we did. The dead tractor we were going for was only about 1.5hrs away so we just loaded the TO-35 Ferguson on the front of the Deckover Trailer and used it to pull the dead one up on behind it.

Easy - just hook it to another tractor or pickup and pull it onto the trailer by driving alongside the trailer with the tow vehicle.

(quoted from post at 15:40:05 08/23/08) Any clever ways to load a dead tractor on a gooseneck trailer without a winch?

I just loaded a dead Case 480CK with a come-along, and bumping the starter in gear when we got to the rear wheels on the trailer edge. We were going to jack-knife the truck and use another truck to pull the machine up, but as a last resort. Once it was loaded, I did use another truck alongside it to adjust and center it.

I loaded an 8n yesterday with a $50 Walmart Master winch and a come-along, and that went surprisingly smooth, aside from bending a rail on my trailer...

I had a welding shop weld me up a heavy duty "C" to fit around the front frame of my trailer, has a sleeve hitch on top. I can put the elec winch I use on the truck hitch in it and run the power to the truck. How much you pull depends on your winch and single or double pull. Sure has paid for itself. That Adapter will fit on both my tow trailers, not my gooseneck. Have to get something made for that or retire. lol Bob
