4010 repair or not ?

My 4010 runs good, no problems. But I developed a leak (it takes several cold starts to show on the stick at all), in or connecting to the power steering. The J/D man was at the farm a few days ago and I ask him if I could get in there without removing the front axle, I guess I have to tear it down. The leak is small but unsightly and bothers me. It stops as soon as the engine warms up. I do not use this tractor in the winter. Should I tear it down or live with it?? Bob

Cosmetic leaking is as serious as it makes you feel. If it is down ones leg, it needs attention. If it is druel on ones pillow, don't use tape on the ofending mouth. :) JimN

Dad would fix it, I would let it drool.

Comes down to personal preference. Do you have the time and the skills to fix it yourself? Does the leak bother you?

I don't let little leaks bother me, if I did I'd have to take my H apart and re-seal everything!

Notanoption as it doesnot have a seperate resovoir. All one system on the 4010. Thanks for the thought though. Bob

Guess I will let it drool for a while, getting it home for the winter would be the hardest part. Sets in the machine shed at the farm snowed in all winter. (no heat out there either). Send your Dad up and I will help him. lol Bob

Well ? how bad and exactly where is it leaking ? a seal ? a rusted out line ?

I'd just hate to be driving it and have it blow the rest of the way out, lose steering then crash and burn. Some things like steering and brakes are just to critical and shouldn't be ignored.

Thanks for the laugh, I agree that if its running down the leg something must be done. My daughter-in-law calls me a neat freak except when it comes to the grandkids, then she calls me a push-over or sucker for a whine or tear. If I dont spoil them who will. Thats my job.

will the tractor actually lose all steering when a line blows or will it be like a car and it still steers, just real hard?

I believe a 4010 is full hydraulic steering - meaning that nothing but two hydraulic hoses and oil connect the steering wheel to the front wheels. If a line blows, no more steering.

I know with IH that starting with the 06 series they went to full hydraulic steering with no mechanical linkage between the wheel and front end...

The 3910 uses power assist cylinders but the 4010 uses pure hydraulics. No juice, no steering. Tough when ya gotta pull a non-runner out the field too.

If the steering line would happen to blow you will not be able to steer.
also if
Engine dies-no steering or brakes either.
