OT--computer-Do I have spy problems??

Occasionally, when I shut down my home computer, I get a message that says "other people are logged onto my computer and by shutting down they may loose information". I have anti-virus protection with daily updates and it sees no problem. Should I be concerned?

are you connected to any other local computers by a local network like by file sharing or printer sharing?
that will cause it.

I got a message once "General Failure Reading Disk". I want to know, just who is this General Failure and why is he reading my disk?

I have two computers , one in basment and a laptop upstairs. I am on at&t wireless and I switch the wireless to the one I am using. The basement computer is the one with message. Never seen message on laptop upstairs. THANKS

I suggest three things for everyone: Anti-virus, Anti-spy and a firewall. You can get them all free. AVG anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm. Leave your PC on at night and AVG will run and update itself automatically.

One more thing, is your wireless well secured with at least WEP and a strong password? Maybe your neighbor (if you live in town) is hitchhiking on your wireless.

I would not use the free zone alarm it is almost worthless in firewall tests. (matousec.com)
there are quite a few great free firewalls but zone alarm is not one of them.

I have had the same message. I've purchased a lot of software to protect my computer but I have found that a good hacker can disable all of them.

If you are using XP home, login then leave it sit so it goes back to the login page (with the cute little pictures)and then select shutdown from that page you will get the message. If you are shutting down from the start button in windows you should not get that message unless someone is logged in. Got kids with separate logins? check on the switch user page (the login page with the little pictures) it should say if one of the other users is logged in.

Just assume someone, somewhere is reading every keystroke, and selling the information to anyone who"ll buy it, and act accordingly.

That's one reason I do not have any personal information on my computer. I never do business on line. Thousands do but I am not convinced.

Hi jiles,

This has nothing to do with a virus or spy ware. It's part of the Windows OS warning system that you could possibly loose unsaved work with that action that you started.

As rhouston stated, when you reboot/shut down without first logging off the user(s) account(s) then you will get this screen warning. It is possible that you could loose any unsaved work.

If you first log off each user account, then reboot/shut down, then you will not loose any work and you will not get the warning message.

To protect your sensitive personal files 100% safe, buy your self a "switched on/off" external hard drive to keep your files on. Keep the HDD turned off when on line. Out of sight, out of mind.
