Combining oats , new versus old

I have not combined oats in many years, the last time I did was 30 years ago with the binder, threshing machine and 1 JD A tractor. Great memories but lots of work, last night started combining with a new Case IH axial flow combine, what would have taken a week in the old days took only a few hours. I still miss the pace of the way it used to be, but give me modern machinery come crunch time!!!!

Perhaps the advantage of doing it the old way, is cleaner product. By cutting and drying in the shocks, weeds and other matter is easier to remove from the product. Actually, the thrashing machinery is much the same as it has been, only self propelled! I think thrashers do better when standing still. We do it the old way - provide oats for thrashing at local (Blanchard, MI) steam show - this weekend. We'll have the equivalent of six LARGE hay wagons this year. Yeah, lots of work!

Sorry, not my combine, borrowed it from a much larger farmer in the area that owed me a couple favors. I still cant afford anything newer than 71.

We did oats at our show this year. Only three racks. Do you have plenty of help usually? I also really think that oats make nice bundles. Have fun, we sure did.

Dave said you had quite a bunch cut. Let's hope, for everybodys sake that you get rained off Saturday. Are you gonna thresh Friday? Mama wants to go to Mt Pleasant friday and I'm thinking about stopping in to Blanchard on the way back instead of risking saturdays weather. I know Kevin won't be there running the Keck friday,he can't get anymore days off work. I'm assuming Dave will be there though running the steam.

Threshing shows in Wisconsin and Iowa sometimes sell/sold the threshed oats to Quacker Oats Company at a 25% to 50% premium- Quacker provided sacks also. The threshed oats were preferred for baby food - lowest weed/foreign object/spoilage rate available and if organic grown were advertised as healthiest. RN.
