94 Chevy Starting Problems

I'm trying to get as many opinions on this as I can. Just late last week my 94 GMC sierra didn't want to start, it has always started and rang good. When I tried to start it, it fired and ran for a second after that, then died.

So I tried again nothng, I hit the gas and it fired right up. Now It does that when is cold. Wont start, give it a hair of gas fires up and runs god but idels rough, shake the truck. Take it out on the road runs perfect. Now when its cold or has been siting for a little bit wont start unless giving it a little gas.

So I have asked several people about this and the general asumption is the fuel pump. It runs perfect at more than an idle. So what do you guys think. It just dont wana start. Not a single proble running it on the road.

I want to MAKE sure it is the pump if that is it before I drop the tank. I am tractor inclined, but my dad can help me with this. It has 93.000 miles on it. What do you think

E.G.R. valve..............most definitely, its stuck open, = huge vac leak at idle or start, requires more fuel to richen up the mixture, remove it, block it and try it again, if its better, buy a new one, if not disreguard my post.

Is this carburated? Fuel injected? If injected, try turning on key for a few seconds before going to start. This will give fuel pump time to pressure the fuel system before you start cranking. Could be that the pressure is leaking down between runs. Carburated? Mechanical fuel pump? Forget what I just said!

Sounds like the EGR valve is stuck open. Sometimes (if you're lucky) it's just a chunk of carbon stuck under the plunger. I have cleaned them with carb and choke cleaner and had reasonable success in getting it free.
Good Luck and God Bless

I dont know about a EGR valve, but my Chevy with throttle body when the fuel pump went out, would barely run.It would die at a stop sign and have to crank and crank to get it started. Then it would not run very good, surge, buck and die if you let off the gas.First I rebuilt throttle body, replaced throttle position sensor, fuel filter, then after that didnt fix it,fuel pump.Fired right up and ran good with a used fuel pump off another pickup.I didnt have a pressure guage, but I thought the fuel pump must be OK since it was pumping fuel.Except when I had the tank off,I hooked both pumps up to a battery to see how they pumped, and although my pump was still pumping, the good pump would pump way more gas.Probably 3 times as much more.
