Jumping tractor backwards....issues

So my mother thought she would try to jump start my JD4020. Well she conected pos of a truck to neg on the left side battery and neg on truck to pos on left side battery

Cable got REALLY hot enough for her to complain about the burn on her finger.

Well now the tractor won't start. Starter doesn't attempt to turn over. I am assuming the silenoid(sp?) is right on top of the starter(the Pos from battery runs to it and then out of another terminal to starter.

Well the only sound I am getting is a 2 inch long 2 inch wide round object clicks rapidly. This thing has 4 posts and a number of differnt wires running to it. It is not sitting onthe starter silenoid assembly but about 4 inches away on the engine side of the fire wall....

Any ideas? Simple as low batteries or something more troublesome/expensive....

Thanks in advance...

But this was his mother. My mother, at ninety three, was still treating me like her little boy. They all do that. She really got mad when I refused to tell her how I got her Corning ware so clean. She got even madder when I told her "I can't tell you. You might get hurt!"

The clicking you hear is coming from a solenoid thats used ahead of the starter solenoid. These came with kits when converted from 24 volt to 12 volt.Test batteries.Sounds like you are not getting enough power to the starter.Mark

Real lucky the battery did not explode. I would take a volt meter and check the battery voltage, if 10-11, give it a slow charge (both batteries that is). Then try to start. Every battery treated that way fails sooner rather than later.

I would not say that around my wife. She can run anything from a dozer to a semi, and can rebuild engines and tractor transmissions right along with me.

Well.... dumb me bought two 6V batteries. Didn't know how it ws wired. Just traded a 3010 for the 4020 last December.

Did connect the two 6V in series, still wouldn't start, but the clicking was stronger and sounded better. Much like what happens in winter around here when batteries get a little low....

Thanks again foryour input...the first thought that goes through my head is a major expense(that I really don't need right now...)
