Ford AA rear end

A friend brought over a Ford 'Doodlebug' made from what I am told is a AA truck chassis. The ring and pinion are bad so now it's time to do some parts searching, but first I want to know what I'm talking about before I dial the phone.

Several years ago I helped with a restoration on a AA 1 ton and it had a worm gear rearend but something in the back of my mind tells me the 2 ton was ring and pinion, which this one has. Am I right on this? The ring gear is 12 inch. Are there any old Ford mechanics out there who can help? Jim

I have seen a couple of AAs with worm drive, and they were 1928 models, the first year of manufacture. I am under the impression that the worm drive was discontinued the following year.

I just found another website about the AA and it said the worm rear end was only used on the early models. This only answers part of the question. I still don't know if there was more than one version of the ring and pinion rear. And if this design was carried through into later models. Thanks for the posts so far. Jim

I've got several TTs and AAs sitting in my field. All the TTs here have worm-drive rears, and all the AAs don't. I can't speak for all the them ever made, but with all the AAs I've seen or have, none had/have worm-drive. One of my TTs has the worm-drive rear with a two-speed hi-low attached to it.

I've also got a shortened AA truck with a rear-mounted winch made from a TT rear. Kind of an interesting rig - more-or-less a homemade tow-truck somebody put together a long time ago.

I've got a few extra AA rears laying in up in field also, condition unknown.
