Do those insulating wraps that go around your hot water tank save you any money off of your utility bills? thanks, bill m.
 
AO Smith water products, State water heaters DO NOT recomend wraping your heater because it will cause it to sweat and rust out your outer jacket.
 
Any additional insualtion is going to reduce energy costs, especially on an electric water heater. I have had one on mine for 20 years, but it's probably not doing much anymore since it's kind of torn up. Also flushushing your tank annually if you have any hardness or lime at all helps keep the elements clean and more efficient.

The answer is a definate maybe, but most likely not enough to bother with.
Check temperature of outside of water heater. If very warm, it might save a little. If close to room temp, probably not save much.
Of course, any heat lost from the heater will reduce the furnace load during heating season.

ditto tn terry, Insulation may cause condensation. Consider replacing your water heater if the outside is warm to the touch. The AO-Smith heater I installed last year is room temperature on the surface.
 
In the 80's the Fed Govt gave tax credits, rebates etc. for installing energy savings items such as water heater blankets, solar hot water heaters, ETC.Many shyster companies got into the Govt's pocket by selling and installing these items. My maintenance company took care of apprimately 4000 apartments for the owners and we replaced over 2000 water heaters that were less than 3 years old due to rust under the blankets. When we realized what was happening, we started a program to get rid of all of them. The cost of that fiasco was great. So much for saving energy. Nuff said Henry
 
Thank you all, it is an A.O.Smith and I have the output pipe insulated and since the outside seems to be room temp I probably wont insulate. Bill M.
