O/T Describing a problem

Looking and test driving a tractor today, and the problem I found was when sitting at a idle the shift lever moves a little bit. When you put you hand on it, you can feel the (throbbing or pulsing of the gears). What is another name for something like that. It is a constant motion in the transmission, like the same spot on the gears. How would you describe or word the problem.
All comments welcome, I am sure there are going to be some good ones.

Some gear shift lever have a ball in the tower housing, and is captured with a spring holding the ball portion of the lever against the housing.
The spring is probably broken and needs to be replaced.

The shift forks and rails are "feeling" the sliding components in motion. If it has many hours, it may need to have the rail detents and shifter pivot rebuilt. If it takes a tiny pressure to "feel" the motion, it may be pretty normal. The groove in the slider has a bit of runout. It may not do it in all gear positions, but only when in the location you experienced, and may include the other "gear" on that rail.
as in 1st and reverse, or fifth and fourth, on a M farmall. JimN
