I have a ford 961D that I'm in the proses of restoring. My problum is that I cant get the head off of the block. I've got all of the head bolts out and tried prying it off with a heavy duty braker bar in the exast ports with no progress. I have done every thing I can think of and am completly stumped on this.
Any other ideas???
I'me open to suggestions.

I have no experience with this idea, so maybe someone else can comment on it.

Assuming the engine isn't seized, try putting the bolts back in loosely, then try slowly turning the engine over with a wrench on the PTO shaft. The compression from the pistons should pop the head free. I want to emphasize slowly and make sure all the bolts have been located first.

Do you have a manual ??? You're going to need it for reassembly, after you take the rockers off and find the Three ??? bolts there, you are going to need the torque #s and sequence. And if you don't like the answers here you can try the ford forum.

the rocker arm is removed. here is a pic of what the engine looks like from the top.

Fellow pried an alunimum oil pan off combine engine, guess what ,hidden bolt ,and broke the pan.Dis assembly completely and look for thosf hidden bolts, must be there somewhere.................

In case _you_ can see the pic, I cannot. You gave it's address as:

http://s6300302.jpg/

Which doesn't make a valid internet address to locate the picture.

_Or_ the internet is having a hiccup & not showing the pic at this moment, that happens too.

repair. thats where i'm comfused. The manual says to "Remove all head bolts and carfully remove head from engine block." thats it.

BTW, if it helps the engine is a 172??? Diesel.
I pulled out all 15 head bolts incuding the long one in the rocker arm and the 4 under the rocker.
Again any advice is welcome.

A trick I learned here. If you can turn the engine over, shove a bunch of rope down through a sparkplug hole into a cylinder, then turn the engine over. Leave some rope out of the hole in case you need to pull it out.

My best shot(from St Cloud)
Cut three strips of 1/2" thick steel that will just fit between the valve springs where the three rocker stands are bolted down. Each should be long enough to go back to the rear of the head and rest on the rim of the valve cover rib, and long enough to cover the head bolt holes shown lining up with them.
Drill a hole in each for a grade 8 bolt to screw well into the rocker stand holes shown in the pic.
Put in three head bolts in those three holes, but do not tighten them, leave them 1/8" loose.
Now put in the metal strips, and sequentially tighten the Grade 8 bolts.
If it still will not budge, and with the force on it, I would drive old Cheap knives (Pawn shop stuff) into the head gasket to begin the fracture process along the port side of the head. Not the point, the flat part of the blade struck on the back edge. Good luck, JimN

First time i tried to remove a water pump from an old Ford flathead V/8, i didn't know about the bolt inside the place where the bottom hose was clamped on. Finally, the head mechanic informed me about it, but he had some fun, watching me scratching my head, before he told me.
