O.T. Snake Trap

I need an idea how to trap snakes that are in my tractor shed ( Is tractor related), they scare the BE-Jesus out of me. I am usually not prepared for them and when I am, I don't see them. They do have snake traps, but at $20 to $25 apiece, it would drive me broke. I do keep mice poison in the shed. The shed does have a dirt floor, very close to a swampy area.

There is no reason to get rid of them. They are in their natural environment and are doing you a favor by eating mice in your shed. They may scare you but it's doubtful they will kill you, unless you have a heart attack when you see one.

If you remove the snakes you will have a larger problem with rodents.

Black snakes are said to outcompete copperheads and rattlers for food. Therefore if you have black snakes, you should not have a problem with the poisonous variety. My parents seed them throughout the farm for this reason. It is a bit of a shock when you come on one, but...

Keep your nitro pills handy!

I've never seen a snake trap. Have you had one crawl out from under the hood of your tractor when you start it, yet? I have.

I agree with the black snakes. They are the only good snake as far as I can determine. However, that being said, I have purchased snake repellent from feed stores and country hardware stores. It is usually just yellow sulfer. Supposedly snakes wony go through it. Used it in my snake infested shed in South carolina where I had some very large copperheads and king snakes. Seemed to have worked for about 4 years. NUff said Henry

KC, I have never tried it myself, but was told by an exterminator that Sevin Dust works very well because it aggravates their skin when they crawl thru it. He said that is what he used to get rid of snakes in customer"s attics.

I've heard moth balls will repel snakes.

Thankfully, all I have around here (knock on wood) is a few garter snakes. They're harmless, non-aggressive, and don't get that big, but they still startle you. I usually just stomp on them if they're in the open, plus my wife usually gets a couple with the mower when she mows our house lawn. (It's about an acre with underground sprinklers and it's HER project.)

I had one crawl INTO the motor area of my van when I went out to get in the van and scared the snake which was hiding under the van. I didn't have time to search for him because I was in college at the time and was going to take a couple of final exams. I had about a 30 mile drive, knowing that dang snake could come into the MY area of the van just anytime it wanted to. Found him when I got back home - turned out to be a ratsnake. Only good thing about it was that after driving 30 miles not knowing for sure where or what kind of snake he was, final exams were totally lacking in any sort or pressure!

We don't have Black Snakes here in Minnesota AFAIK, but the beneficial ones here are Bull Snakes. They're better than felines for controlling the rodents. The only trouble is they look a lot like Rattle Snakes and will even coil and vibrate their tales to make you think that they are rattlers. That and finding a 6ft long one is not that uncommon and that's just plain unsettling. The only problem we have ever had with them is that they will steal chicken eggs. This is not a problem as long as you fetch the eggs before dark, once when I was a kid I went to pick up eggs after dark without a flashlight and put my hand right into one coiled up in a nest box. It gives me a chill just remembering that.

There is a garter snake living in my basement. I have seen it a couple of times. No mice. My basement is just a utility and storage area and has a good tight door between it and the upstairs.

Now if it comes upstairs or the wife sees it down there it will have to die I guess.

Around My Place... I used to have alot of mice, and a Snake Occasionally and I Didn't care for Domestic cats... But They Built some houses above me, And Guess what, Almost Everyone has a House "CAT", since then I have Neither seen a Mouse OR Snake, and I live out in the Boondocks, Get some cats they will do it for sure,, Larry KF4LKU

Cats will kill mice and other small rodents. When you have a sufficient number of cats you will have virtually no snakes or mice. We used to consider five cats to be just about right for our operation.

Make a wire cage. The hole in the wire needs to be big enough for the snake to get through, but small enough a golf ball can't. Put the golf ball in there with 2 eggs. Sure is hard for the snake to get back out of the cage.

I'm with you, I don't want any surprises. If snakes stay outside and away from buildings they can live in peace with me.

You might try smearing some bacon grease on ping pong balls to see if they will swallow them. Kind of a terrible way to die however.

You might give "Snake Away" a try to see if it would work for you.
