Alternative to high gas prices

Now here is one I could like
I was reading in the Georgia Farmers Market Bulletin yesterday Seems a couple of farmers/Self-employed Businessman in Warner Robins, GA. have started putting old tractor engines in used pickup trucks. The first couple they did run on diesel or bio-diesel and got all most 50 miles to the gallon and run 85 + miles per hour.
They have started putting turbo-charged tractor engines in cars.
To read more about them they have a web site ( www shadetreeconversions com) ( add the right dots)

I read some where a week or two ago, think it was on here where some one put a little Yamar diesel in a S10. Sounds like a good idea to me. They said it would top out about 70 and got great mileage.

Keep in mind that for many states these would not pass the emissions regulations... and for those that it would pass - it might not in a couple more years as the CA emissions seem to be a real popular benchmark for other states to go by...

I have a ford ranger with a deere 4045T I put in about 3 yrs ago,a ford one ton with a cummins and a international 4900 that i am putting a deere 466 in (still working on that). I didnt need any books just a torch, welder, and be able to read a tape measure. Also that ford ranger has plenty of power, actually it has way to much power for a ranger and it will bury the speedo if I feel safe enough to go that fast in that old truck. And if the roads are a little damp when I shift into 5 th gear and get up to about 30 psi of boost it will break the tires loose if you are not carefull.

Just a couple minutes ago there was an article on cnn.com about another Georgia man who converted his S-10 to electric. Must be a thing in Georgia right now!;-)

Here in Caifornia it is sorta easy to get a conversion from gasoline to diesel through the state referee. Going from diesel to gas is misery.
Conversions can be a great hobby, and it made sence when diesel was cheap, however, if you are trying to save money, it is cheaper just to buy gas.

I have seen similar articles in farmshow magazine, and also in some of the new diesel truck magazines. The important thing to remember, is that small diesel tractor engines produce low hp but high torque numbers. Torque is what really matters, HP is what gets you up to speed fast.

Check out 4btswaps.com

I would disagree a little. HP matters more as it is a measure of work done. If you have more torque it doesn't matter if you don't get as much work done.

Yep it does have enough power. Will only run 80 tho, but will do it up some pretty good hills.
Putting another together for a friend now.

Alright, it looks like my previous post was incomplete.

I am not here to dispute the definition of horsepower, torque or work. It has been my observation, that these guys are replacing gas motors with smaller displacement diesels. So there should be no suprise they are getting better MPG. I just wanted to point out the torque produced by the smaller diesel is probably comparable to the gas motor they are replacing. At least that way you would get a vehicle the almost performs the same except for acceleration- which would be much slower.

Hence my statement, if you want to go fast from 0 to blinding speed, you"ll need your engine to make HP. If you want to tow, you"ll want your engine built to make torque.

I smell a rip off on that website. They give no
information on what the book contains so you can make a rational decision on whether to buy it.
It is below the integrity of this column to suggest such a "snake oil site".
