my starter generator started cranking my lawnmower really slow now it wont turn it over at all and gets whatever i try to start it with(jumper cables to terminals) very hot to the point where it melted the battery terminal. i ordered new brushes think that will fix it? i previously tried grinding them down a bit on a belt sander

Im afraid it may be a shorted or dragging bad armature if it gets reallyyyyyyyy hottttttttttt. Might wanna insure the bushings/bearings are good and the armature isnt dragging the field poles. Look for badly burned or pitted commutator sections and/or burned armature windings.

If this mower has an OHV Briggs engine, adjust the valves (.008" exh, .005 int.) before you do anything else. This should cure or at least mitigate your starting problems.

Those permanent magnet field coils sometimes break up and make the armature drag. Don't ever hit it with a hammer!

Time to toss the old starter generator into the recycling bin. And purchase a new 20 amp unit from ebay.
Because you tried to "brute force" it instead of finding the problem. You are now purchasing a new battery as well. A battery with a melted post is a candidate to explode acid all over you and your tractor.

Well I doubt that an engine with a starter generator has OHV My guess is check all grounds. Physically remove them and wire brush terminals and frame contacts and make sure all contacts are clean, Make sure the posts on the S/G are tight, If you can turn the wire easily moving the post, The post needs tightened Take off wires to that terminal and tighten bottom nut, then tighten the wires on that terminal. [Bad contacts will cause overheating of wires, as you describe. Adding the extra jumper only added to the heat factor, and melted the post.
