Dodge Dakota Exhaust Leak Driving Me Nuts

I have an exhaust leak on my '96 dakota that has the 3.9L. This engine is non EGR. I've replaced the entire exhaust system including the exhaust manifold gaskets. Not only has the leak not gone away, but I never found where it is leaking from. (the tone of the leak also never changed before or after the swap)

At idle or at highway speeds, there is no noise. Only when I put some load on the engine is there a "tick." Am I missing something? Where else should I look for a leak? Could it be something else?

How about a lifter, how about detonation? Put a rag over the exhaust and see where it comes out. Don't think you have a heat riser, they can leak. If v8 exhaust passes through intake and can leak there. How about exhaust manifold and gaskets.?

Next time it's empty (fuel), try a little higher octane and see what happens. At 12 years old, you should be able to see an exhaust leak also (suit).

Good Luck,

Dave

Brings back memories of my old cuda 383 magnum with headers. Ticking at excel. drove me nuts too. It was the thin metal of the headers and nothing could be done about it. Funny, after knowing the cause, it didn't bother me anymore. It seemed trivial to anyone I whooped.

Yes, I did resurface them. I couldn't see where they had been leaking to begin with which was slightly disturbing since I was almost certain that was the source.

No exhaust leak on mine but after 3 garage visits, new hoses, new gas cap, new evap solenoid, and $500 bucks missing from my wallet... the check engine light is STILL on!!

check your cat. converter mine was pluged ran fine till you got on the gas then it sounded like a mack truck

I don't know either, but I shore hope ya figger it out and let us know what it was. I have the same problem with my 96' Dakota with the same engine. Well, not the SAME engine - but one just like it! She's got a whoppin' 67,000 miles on her. I've done the same as you what with changin' out the exhaust. I pretty much just gave up and turned up the radio...but now that quit workin' too!

It's good to know there is another truck out in the world with the same problem. I'll start going through the list of things to try and I'll let you know what I find. Hopefully just changing the grade of fuel I buy will solve it. The truck just runs too good for it to be a head gasket, but who knows?

I had a 90 Dodge full size pickup with that engine. It always had a click on idle. I never could get it to stop either. One thing I did find is the block of material in the converter was loose and could slide back and forth. I ended up breaking it out. It improved performance but didn't get rid of the click. I drove that truck over 100,000 miles before I sold it. It's still running as I see it around from time to time.
