IH 470 Disc and Chopping Stalks

I'm looking at an 18' IH 470 disk and am wondering how good one of these would be for going though a corn field after harvest to chop up the stalks and level thing out. The price is right, but if it's just going to scratch at the surface, it won't do me any good. I'm not looking to do any serious tillage with it, I just want to work in the stalks a little and leave a respectable amount of residue on the top.

Thanks!

I guess that would depend on how wore the blades are. If they are wore out and have no cutting edge left, it's not going to cut them up very well, BUT it will spread them around and mix some dirt with them. Personally, I would like to find a disc like that, they are well built and do a good job. Check your area and see if anyone has a disc blade roller that sharpens them. Not that expensive and really helps them cut better. Where are you and how much? If you are close enough and don't want it, I would be interested. Chris

I'm in Southern WI and I bought it this morning for $1000 delivered. It's not the prettiest piece, but I don't have shed space so I figured why spend the money on a nice one. The blades on the wings are like new, but I might end up replacing the ones on the main frame. What it looked like is whoever owned it before, just used it as a 10' unit. I've priced out discs and even after figuring in my time, I should still be money ahead when compared to what most bring around here that are 1/2 wore out.

only disk in the afternon when the sun has been shining all day.
stop when they start getting tough.
IF you catch the stalks just right they are very dry and brittle, they will shatter when the disk hits them.
a little bit of dew and they get tough and it is a totaly different game
