FWIW: the new version of Ubuntu 8.04 -Hardy is out. It is about the most fool proof thing I have very tried. I am very close to dumping MS. Hope this is not considered spam. Kenny

Been waiting to hear about it. One of these days i'm gonna change also.
I played with Linux way back when it first was available, worked excelent, what I could get to work. The "Geek factor" was just too high way back then.

On my computer it found all drivers, hooked up my network, and my DSL etc. Only thing I told it was "english". Firefox was loaded and ready to run. Nice thing is the CD will boot and run it from the CD with out messing your computer for a test. Bad thing is it is a 700 meg down load. 7 hours on my DSL.

Hey Ken,

I've been running Linux at home for over ten years, starting with Red Hat 4.2. It has certainly come a long ways towards being usable for the average person. I've been running Fedora for some time; haven't tried Ubuntu although I've heard nothing but good things about it. I will NEVER run Windows on my personal PC.

I always keep a Knoppix CD handy for when the Windows PCs at work crash. I've made a lot of people happy when support tells them that they have to rebuild the machine and wipe out their files. At least half the time I've been able to save files off a PC that support has written off as trashed.

I was a bit surprised to see fellow Linux users here, but the more I think about the more it makes sense. Bunch of tinkers and DIY'ers around here.

Been using Linux since 1996. I admin Linux servers for my payin' job.

Ubuntu seems to be a very nice distribution. Definitely the best choice for the PC in my opinion.

You might also try OpenSolaris. I've been running it for a couple years now on my toshiba laptop. Never crashes, tools are good and they've been working on it religiously.
