irrigation gun cost question

Well, I have a well, 12" that can produce 500 gpm. I am leaning towards corn on the feilds around this well next year, but I need to invest in a gun, traveling or not. I also will need to buy, or rent a pump, as the pump was removed from my well, (wasnt my pump), when I stopped renting out the land. Does any one have any ideas what a used gun is gonna cost me, or the pump and installing. I'm not sure if I should go PTO driven, electric or what. I plan on utilizing my chicken manure, 280+ tons, no shavings, and going with corn on a larger scale next year, higher pop as mentioned below, but only if I can set up to water it if it is a dry season. I was gonna increase my rye acreage, but with rye at $6.75-$8 this year and alot of people's corn/beans drying up, I am thinking that in my area ALOT of people are gonna jump on the rye seeding this fall and the higher prices will be way down next fall. With fertilzer cost I am thinking less acres of corn will be planted and the corn price will stay good. Any recommendations on the watering set up, or prices I should expect? Also, what do you guys think about my rye/corn assumptions?

Rye is not grown here for grain, or anywhere in Iowa for that matter.

Most of Iowa is the corn or soybean question as to what to grow.

It is hard to guess which will be a better deal.

For that reason I grow about 50% of each, every year instead of trying to out guess the trends.

If I had access to the cheap fertilizer as you do I would lean a little heavier on the corn every year.

Electric is cheaper than diesel.
Plus you can use a variable frequency drive to control flow & pressure rather than suffering losses from valving.
Laying a header up the middle of the field and using a power reel with a traveling gun is an economical solution. Flexable too.

Dave,

We have an irrigation pump srevice here in town. They might be able to give some good answers as to what to go with and costs. I think he sells used and rebuilt stuff as well.

If your a little east of St. Cloud, I gotta be about 50-60 miles west of you.

I left my email open, I can give you phone #`s if you want. BW

In this part of the world we're seeing a change over, or new wells, to electric motors for the pumps. There may be grant money for solar pumps that I need to search out further.

Typically for corn and other crops the most popular is a 9 link pivot per 1/4 section.

Friend of mine near Roscoe put in three pivots this year. Very happy he went with electric pumps on his two wells, considering where fuel prices are. He dealt with Traut in St. Cloud. Staples is another area big on irrigation- should be some dealers there, as well as Brooten.
