My daughers car quit on her about a mile from home, it is a 2001 Dodge Stratus (114K miles)with a 2.4L four cylinder, have fire at the plugs and fuel at the fuel rail. I can"t hear the fuel pump when whe turns on the key, but the pressure keeps coming back to the rail. However, when I checked the engine oil it was not on the dipstick, had to add 4 quarts, She says the oil light was not lit, and the check engine light is not on. Could there be some kind of safety interlock with oil level or pressure? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Rich

I would say the balance shafts in the pan siezed due to lack of oil, this in turn broke the balance shaft chain/sprocket witch in turn broke the timing belt, If you do not have compression on all the cylinders, you have a broken timing belt, BTW that engine is a close tolerance, if the belt broke, you may have bent valves. Or it could be something really simple, there is no low oil pressure lockout device, if you have spark, fuel and air it should run, if you have compression.

That's a self-destructing engine. Timing belt changes are supposed to be done as per the manual's mileage. Everything is kept alive thanks to that timing belt. You need to see if the belt is still on there and functional before you start. Does it even turn over?

The engine does turn over, but doesn't have any compression, I believe it is shot. The dealer is supposed to get it tomorrow, says he will fix it, but I am skeptical.
