What Kind of Tires do I Need?

It's time, actually past time, to replace the 12.4x28 tires on an IH 424 that is mainly used for mowing a few acres and brush hogging trails on rocky Ozark hillsides. Looking at ads I see there is a choice of tread types and would like some advice: Will one type of tread be better than another? Does it really matter? And am I limited to the same size tires without changing the rims?

There are 3 main types of tread and they are

R1----Ag tires or tractor tires, big diagonal
lugs that will not be nice to grass.
but is the best for traction.

R4---All purpose tire for good traction and
doesnt tear up grass. (what is have on
my compact deere tractor) Also known as
industial tires.

Turf tires--used for grass not good for traction in snow/ice. These are mostly known as R3 I think.

Then there is a smooth tire that look like balloons on the rims, I have never seen these other then in catalogs. Golf courses have these tires on equipment.
Hope this helps.

Bill,
Not that sure about tread design, but since you are on some hills I would stay with an Ag tire as opposed to a turf tread. You can probably go up or down 1 size and not really have to worry about rim size, just might have to adjust air pressure to get full tread contact.
