ot 88 chevy 2500 tranny

im looking into buying a 1988 chevy 2500 extended cab 8" bed over all decent truck except the tranny is smoked it still has forward gears but no reverse and the fluid smells like burnt plastic no being slightly incompetent i forgot to look at what tranny this truck has its a 4 speed auto anyone know?

At one point in time, I was yanking and rebuilding one of those '88 units every day.

Think it was the 1988 model that made GM decide that maybe we ought to put a little bigger transmission in the 3/4 ton.

That little guy just couldn't handle heavy service with the standard cooling. They would get so hot that the converter would turn totally blue and the oil would have a stench to 'em that would absolutely gag a maggot. :>)

If you're gonna use it for heavy work, I'd sure be for adding the GM aux cooler up in front of the condenser.

You've got the 4L60 transmission like Bob says.

You might double check the transmission by sight. I have a buddy who has a '90 single wheel 3500 that still has a T400 trans.

A properly built TH7004R is fine IF. Like any other transmission. Ther eis enough cooling capacity, in particular when running without the torque convertor locked up.
If fact check that. Some home tinkerers tend to pull the wire off the lockup. The cooler sized for use with a working lockup convertor can not keep the temps down with the extra slippage.
Precission Industries build single, triple and five plate lockup torque convertors. They don"t slip and they don"t make heat.
To be honest I would look at something that old. The 1998-2006 trucks are selling shockingly cheap. The 4L80"s in those were built for towing.
